Weekend Tasklist

It’s the last weekend before Christmas, anybody else running around like a headless chicken or is that just me? Last weekend, I decided that I wasn’t going to get it all done and that I’d need another day this weekend, so this list is a Friday to Sunday one. If by Sunday night it’s not done, it’s probably not going to get done and I’m ok with that. My mantra for the weekend is ‘the only stress that I feel is stress I put on myself’.

This week, I did get some stuff done, all presents that are being bought, have been bought, Christmas cards have been written and posted, things have been done, I don’t feel quite as out of control as I did on Monday morning, we’ll see if it lasts.

Friday Links

Happy Friday! I’m very happy today because I took a day off work to sort out the flat and a Christmas tree and have coffee with a friend. Here are this week’s links..

1) Suzanne Moore on how to be a good mother. Lovely and very true and thanks Ma for telling me to read it!

2) What a Ten-Month-Old really wants for Christmas (this came via Kate)

3) Those born after 1960 probably won’t be better off than there parents. Unless of course there’s inherited wealth. Well, that’s a statement of the obvious. I’ve long thought that my old age will resemble that of my great-grandparents (the ones that made it to retirement!) and yes this is the world that Thatcher made…

4) Mince Pie Manhattan anyone? Well it’s festive…

5) Are we asking the wrong question about Wonga loans?

6) Saving Mary Poppins. I read all the Mary Poppins books when I was at primary school, I get them from the library and I loved them and this nails why I didn’t like the idea of ‘Saving Mr Banks’ even if it does have Emma Thompson in it!

7) Well that just sums up all that’s wrong with the Govt. Laughing at desperation…it’s still the Nasty Party..

8) Why pensioners are lushes!

9) This is horrifying and that it happened in the US doesn’t mean that it couldn’t have happened here. The Exoneration of Kash Register and the Problem of False Eyewitness Testimony.

It’s like this every year…

This week has been tough, no actually that’s not true. This week has felt tough. I’m tired, in migraine fortnight and it’s really, really dark so my SAD urge to hibernate has turned itself up to a million and I just want to sleep.

Getting out of bed this morning was a feat of incredible willpower over desire to just go back to sleep. Also why is it that I can’t sleep from the hours of 3am to 6am but can from 6am to 9am?

Added to that we’re 6 days away from Christmas and there still seems to be so much that I haven’t done, that I may not get done and I’ve only got one Christmas card (just call me Nicola-No-Mates!). Work is busy because we’re trying to make sure that everything is done before Friday and over Christmas, I’m coming into work and covering stuff and I’m sure that I’ve missed something because I seem to be on top of it and that never happens (which may sound like a humble brag but really isn’t!)

So, I’m tired, migraine-y and ever so slightly stressed. In other words, an absolute joy to be around and I wonder why I’ve only got one Christmas card…

Then I leave the house and the sky is blue and slightly pink and I talk to my Ma about her tree (which has just been delivered) and I get a grip.

20131219-095847.jpg

It’s like this every year, the run up to Christmas, the dark, the birthdays and anniversaries that make me a bit sad, the actual SAD.

Those things don’t change, but this year I can see through that, yes, other people have better jobs, bigger houses, more money, partners and children, alive fathers that don’t have drink problems…..the list of what I don’t have, that other people do is endless….

It’s no way to live, comparing my life to others and dwelling on what I don’t have, I have enough to be happy and well. Which is more than most of the people on the planet and more than a lot of people in this country have.

I’ve said that every year,  I’ve known that every year (even the year that I didn’t have a job, had no money and felt that I’d never work again!) but this year, I understand it, I feel it. Yes, I am a bit down, I am slightly stressed and life is tricky for me to navigate at this time of year but overall, I’m good. My life is good and despite a couple of moments of overwhelm, because I am a stress bunny, I’m happy.

Which is a lovely feeling and has been a long time in coming.

I hope that you feel this way about your life too, if you don’t, please know that even if it doesn’t feel like it right now, it will change. Please just hang on and things will turn around, maybe not in the way you think but it will turn around.

Handmade Christmas – Mint Chocolate Sugar Scrub

Like a lot of the things I am giving to people this year, the idea is not original. There are a ton of homemade sugar scrub recipes around at the moment but this particular one came from How Sweet It Is and was all about the coconut.

photo

I was already committed to making the olive oil handscrub and the scrub seemed like a good companion gift. As an added bonus, I knew I had all the ingredients in my kitchen, except the coconut extract but coconut is not a favourite smell of mine, so I just thought that I’d leave it out.

Until I had the idea of putting peppermint extract (not oil – they are different!) and oh man, it’s amazing, it smelled like After Eights.

photo

So before I give you the goods, a couple of notes, I had some food grade coconut oil that was given to me and I used that in the batches for giving away, but for the batch that I’ve been using, I used the tub of the Waitrose Baby Massage Coconut Oil which is considerably cheaper than the food grade stuff, it’s less than £3, I used demerara because I had it and it’s quite a ‘grainy’ sugar but you could use soft brown sugar for a softer scrub. I also think that you could use orange extract for a different ‘flavour’, just try and remember that it’s not for eating!

What

1 cup demerara sugar

1/2 cup solid coconut oil

1/3 cup almond oil

2 tablespoons cocoa powder (I used Bourneville!)

1 teaspoon peppermint extract

How

Put all ingredients in a bowl

Stir together until the coconut oil breaks down

Advent Calendar

I’m really loving this year’s advent calendar, which never has chocolate in it…

It really comes into it’s own when it’s dark and there are candles

The calendar is the only Christmassy thing that I have up right now, it’s helping me appreciate the waiting.

Cheese Stars

I gave in,  I added Cassie’s Cheese Straws to my baking list. Only I did it slightly differently because I have to be me and because I didn’t have some of key ingredients or a cookie press.

photo

They are really good. I left out the hot sauce and the cayenne ’cause I didn’t have any, I don’t like hot things at all and I want to feed these to the nephew, and while he eats most things, I don’t want to risk it.

This batch has been mostly bagged up for my Christmas bag of treats!

photo

Cheese Stars (adapted from Back to Her Roots)

8oz cheese (I used Colliers, which is my favourite but a good strong cheddar is the key here!)

6oz butter, cubed

1 egg

1/2 teaspoon Worcester sauce

1 and 3/4 cups plain flour

1/2 teaspoon paprika

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

1 teaspoon mustard powder

1 teaspoon smoked sea salt

How

1) Pre heat oven to 180c

2) Use the grater disc of your food processor to grate the cheese or grate by hand.

3) Change the attachment to the processor blade and put cheese, butter egg and Worcester sauce into food processor and pulse until combined.

4) Add the flour, paprika mustard powder and salt and pulse the processor until a dough forms. The dough will be soft but not sticky.

5) Take a chunk of the dough and roll out on a floured surface until about the thickness of a pound coin and cut the shapes out. I used a star but use what you fancy or you can cut into straws!

6) Brush with milk and bake for about 10 to 13 minutes, until the edges are slightly browned.

7) Let cool and then either eat or store!

The Weekend is gone…

The weekend just whizzed by, on Friday night I was in bed by 8pm and slept all the way through until 8pm!

Then I was up and sorting stuff out, two batches of pastry for mince pies and the biscuit dough! Then off for a haircut and some Christmas colour!

Sunday Music

Because when I was little I thought this was about my Dad, Noel. This wasn’t something he discouraged and today would have been his birthday….
