Bookshelves of Doom

I love to read, as I grew up I just expanded what I read, I didn’t stop reading children’s books because I was too old for them, I just read adult books as well.

Since Harry Potter and a couple of other books (His Dark Materials and the Curious Incident of the Dog at Night Time, spring to mind)  YA fiction has become quite fashionable and I don’t get quite so many funny looks on the train but I am also reading more YA, this is down to one blog, Bookshelves of Doom.  I have been following it for about a year and a half, Lelia has good taste, is a librarian and loves YA (and great title for a blog!!).

My Amazon habit is almost out of control, because often that is the only place I can get the books she talks about.

If you have a YA reading habit, go have a look.

You can pick your friends

The problem I’m finding is getting to the stage where your friends become like your family.  Sometimes that works out great, I have friends that are the family I got to pick and I love them, like I love my family in spite rather than because of their (and my) quirks.  Sarah is always late!  Christelle has this habit of sniffing food she’s never tried before, but I only notice it nowadays when someone else points it out. And Tina and Charles will always put milk in my tea, even though I haven’t drunk it since I’ve known them (that would be 20 years!!).  I am always late too, when I am tired I get whiny, and I can talk for England….

So what’s the problem?

I didn’t pick my family, it’s not my fault that my mother memorizes the train timetables in the most annoying way or my brother….come to think of it he did that at school but with bus routes…..I’m just glad that it bypassed me.  But they are my family and the only decision that we have to make is whether we are close or not.

Friendship however is a more slippery thing.

What happens when someone you picked, unpicks you?  14 years of a relationship (someone you used to talk nearly every day, who you saw through a change of career and god knows how many house moves, who supported you through the worst thing that ever happened to you) just stops being interested in you.  You wonder why.  Did you do something? They don’t call and you have called but they don’t return your calls, so you can’t even ask.  You feel hurt and angry and sad and this person that you think of as family is seemingly unmoved.  What did you do?  The worst of it, is that after a while, this change poisons your past.  Everything you thought that you knew about them is a lie, they weren’t really your friend, they didn’t really like you.  And remember you picked them, what is it about you that makes such poor choices?  Then you start to question your judgment and you begin to worry about everything you do.  Does that person really like you?  Can you let them close? If you do or say that, will they stop talking to you to?

It’s devastating.  I have watched the man I love die, that was truly dreadful and I wondered if I would ever get over the loss.  But I never doubted my love or his.  He left because there was no other choice.  There is some comfort in that (it wasn’t something I could have prevented) this is dreadful in a different way because I feel I must have done something awful to provoke such indifference in one of my closest friends.

I don’t know and I never will, I hope without reason that whatever it is will change and my friend will start to be my friend again, whether that happens or not, with time it will sting a little less and I will make new friends and do other things.

But I’ll always wonder……

Harold Pinter

Last year, I saw Betrayal at the Donmar, and I loved it.  It was the second Pinter play I had seen (the first one being ‘The Caretaker’, which I wasn’t that keen on.)  Since then I have seen ‘The Lover/Collection’ and today ‘A Slight Ache’.

I didn’t see them ’cause Pinter wrote them but because of the actors in the plays.  But I’m struggling with him.  I just don’t get it.

A Slight Ache is beautifully acted, it’s a short play, originally written for radio.  And I was baffled.  And it wasn’t just me, as I came out there were lots of people scratching their heads.  Which is a shame.  I see a lot of theatre but it’s difficult to convince some of my friends that it’s worth seeing if it isn’t a ‘show’ or doesn’t have Dr Who in it.  So a hour long play, starting at 6pm, costing less than a tenner, might get people who aren’t sure about theatre. But not if it’s Pinter…….

Family

It was my uncle’s birthday on Monday, on Sunday, everyone descended on the garden to eat, drink and of course help Ian celebrate his birthday.

Martinis

What makes the perfect martini??

There are various schools of thought on this and I’m not going to be a hater.  But for me it has to be gin, and for preference, Plymouth, Hendricks or Martin Miller.  Never Gordons and not vodka.  The only thing that I will insist on is that you never, ever shake it.  James Bond may have had shaken not stirred but he was wrong, wrong I tell you…..

I don’t like olives and I don’t like dirty martinis….you may but don’t ask me to drink them…and make ’em dry

My brain needs a holiday

Since the beginning of the month, instead of being a deputy team manager, I have been a team manager for half the week and a deputy team manager for the other half.  The other deputy team manager (Sabrina) has been doing the same thing.  As for the half of the week there is only one deputy team manager, we have another person (Manjinder) in to be the other deputy, but she is still being trained.

I know it’s confusing, I understand what’s happening and writing it out confused me.

What this mostly means is a huge learning curve for me (and the other two – but they can write about that on their blogs!).  But being a team manager is not all we do, we manage a building, so Sabrina and I have inherited a project each.  The one that I have could seem a bigger project but it was mostly planned out by someone else.  It does require some tweaking but not a huge amount. And training, I know how to do what I do but having to show someone else is a way that makes sense to them…is hard (for me anyway)

So I am mostly tired with all the work thinking I have to do…and…my brain needs a holiday…..

that is all

Female Bishops

Hurrah, I can’t think that God would want it any other way…but I am sad to see the fighting and anger that this has provoked.

I really struggle to understand why it’s important that the person standing on the altar is a man or a woman and remain convinced that what matters is commitment and faith they hold.  My personal conviction is that we need to look at the whole concept of ‘priesthood’ and how church works.  I can’t see why, just because the disciples were men, only men can be priests. If we want to get specific, priests should only be Jewish converts, mostly ex-fishermen from Galilee.

Bloom

Despite the weather, we went to the Crem yesterday and found that Grandad’s rosebush had produced some roses.  As we have never seen it flower before, it made us very happy..
