Friday Links

Happy Friday!

1. This is another article about abortion. The right to have an abortion is something I care about and I am fed up with the debate being framed in terms of something a woman will always regret.

2. Polly Toynbee on the Labour Party and class. There’s a lot being said about this at the moment and I think Polly is wrong. Yes, there have always been middle and upper class people in the Labour Party but where are the working classes, now? Clem Attlee led the party and went to Oxbridge, but Nye Bevan was in that Cabinet. Emily Thornberry shouldn’t have sent that tweet, it may be that she was being a snob, it may be that she was taken aback by what she saw, the point is that she shouldn’t have been. When Alan Johnson and John Prescott are the only two Labour politicians, you can think of with working class roots (oh and Dennis Skinner) then you’re in trouble because the clue is in the name of the party! And this happened this week:

3. It seems wrong for me to comment on what happened in Ferguson, what is happening now, it’s not my country. I will say this, 12 bullets 11 too many and for the police officer to say he has no regrets? Seriously, you took a life, you should have regrets and you shouldn’t be a police officer. However, Jesse Jackson said this and it’s worth reading.

4. Andrew Brown on how churches should support all marriages, not spend time promoting one version.

5. How to ruin Thanksgiving. I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, obviously and we don’t do the British traditional turkey at Christmas either. As a kid, we had pork and nowadays we go for beef. Having said that, we’re at Ben and Lu’s this Christmas and it’s probably going to be turkey. I’m just reminding myself that I’m not having to cook and that’s a good thing but it won’t feel like Christmas!

6. Owen Jones on the East Coast mainline re-privatisation, it doesn’t make sense and it’ll probably be an expensive disaster but why let common sense or public opinion get in the way of political ideology.

7. I’ve had two posts about Christmas this week, the lovely Gin Monkey has a post about how to put more gin in your Christmas day, which everyone should go and read!

Advent Calendars

I’m a big fan of advent calendars, as a child I always wanted one with chocolate in them but as an adult, I’ve become very anti them. I wrote about how much I enjoyed my calendar last year.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This year I’ve gone for this one from Alison Gardiner.

I buy the godchildren (Luc, Helene, Josh and Elly) an advent calendar every year, this year I’ve added Oli and Ms T to the list. The bigger children got a straightforward one like mine but I’ve bought one each of these for Oli and Tabs.

Every year, I think that I’d like to do a make your own with an activity for each day. There are loads of ideas floating around the internets and lots of kits to help with the creativity side of it. I seriously thought about this one but decided that I didn’t have the time or the creativity to do it well. I also thought about a candle this year instead of a calendar, like this one , but it somehow doesn’t seem as exciting as a calendar.

Secretly, I’d like one of these or these but it doesn’t really seem fair that I could get gin when I won’t let the godchildren have chocolate!

Christmas Music 2014

It’s not even Advent yet but Christmas is a month away and on Sunday, Sunday Music will be from this year’s Christmas music CD.

For new people, every year for the last 4, Luc, Helene and I have put together a CD of Christmas songs. We pretty much put this one together last year, because we were just so excited!

20131223-093816.jpg

As part of getting into the Spirit of Christmas and as we did last year, we’re going to give them away too. I clearly think it’s pretty good, but this this year we have punk hymns, James Brown, Elvis, my favourite version of While Shepherds Watched and lots more.

20131225-194655.jpg

Hopefully you want to know more, or you just like Christmas music. If so leave a comment or email me at nic06dempsey.gmail.com with your address and I’ll get the CD to you! I won’t keep your address or use it for anything other than sending you a CD.

Thankful

Last week I was really bad at taking photos that related to what I was thankful for so some of these are old photos!

Tuesday 18 November

Tuesday was a fairly standard day, I got 10 out of 10 on the Guardian quiz, Ma got new carpet but there was nothing I could point to as amazing. On Tuesday night, after Dev went home, I did my before bed yoga and realised that an ordinary day was something to be thankful for, here the view when I worked that out!

Wednesday 19 November

I was really, really tired on Wednesday. I was really thankful for coffee and all it’s miracles…

Thursday 20 November

A night of no socialising. I’m an introvert, much as I love people, they drain me. Tonight was a blessedly quiet night, I didn’t sleep well but I was thankful for the chance to re-charge my emotional energy.

Friday 21 November

Saturday 22 November

Today is a quiet day at home, Ma is coming over tonight and tomorrow we’re in Watford. Today is also Oli’s birthday. My nuclear family is small, me, Ma, Ben, Lu and Oli. We have our ups and downs but I’m really thankful that I have them and that we (mostly) get on. There was a time I couldn’t have said that. So I’m even more grateful now.

Sunday 23 November

Sunday started off well, if earlier than I’d like and we were off to Watford for Oli’s party. My sister-in-law made this cake, I’m a bit jealous ’cause cake decoration is not a skill I have! The journey home was a nightmare and took over 2 hours. I chose to be thankful that although it was a horrible journey, I wasn’t late for anything, there was no-where I had to be, if trains are going to go wrong, it’s nice when you don’t have to be anywhere!20141125-085528-32128937.jpg

Monday 24 November

Ma finally moved. I’m grateful that she’ll never have to do it again, I’m thankful that she has a secure home and I’m really thankful, I haven’t lost my furniture putting together mojo!

Life Happened – Babysitting and birthday parties

Last week was mostly about catching up with everyone…

So in brief, Dev came over and we plotted to take over the world. I had a conversation with my brother about all of the stuff we’re all up to – poor Oli had a bit of a tumble down the stairs! Kathy came around and we talked about her challenges with raising her small people (weirdly enough, some of the conversations I had with H last week about identity and family culture really echoed some of the things that K & A will begin with their two!). I finally caught up with Ryan, who was considerably less grumpy than the last time I spoke to him and it was obviously my week for Devereaux’s because on Thursday I spoke to Sarah, who has finally qualified as a therapist..yay!

I mostly struggling with feeling tired and migrainy. It’s that time AND it’s November so my sleep patterns are buggered. It’ll come around.

On Friday, I babysat so K & A could go out and celebrate their wedding anniversary, it’s a win, win, ’cause I get to play with their babies and get a TV for the night.

Babysitting and tiredness and the prospect of a busy, busy weekend meant I cancelled my haircut so I could spend Saturday catching up at home and getting some rest.

Ma stayed with me on Saturday night so we could get up early and get to Watford for the birthday party of the year…

Oli had been quite sick this week with an ear infection and a fall so everyone was a bit worried that he wouldn’t make his own party…

What I Ate

Because of the festival of painting last weekend, I didn’t get around to doing anything vaguely house or shopping related. The house was pretty tidy and I was mostly up to date with laundry so it wasn’t a disaster and I thought that I’d go shopping on Monday night and it would be ok.

Then I wondered what if I didn’t? The fridge seemed pretty packed with vegetables and the freezer always seems full so why not find out if I could live for the week without doing a shop. That’s what I did so instead of a menu plan for next week, I’d thought I’d show you what I ended up eating last week.

Monday night I made Rachel Roddy’s lentils.

20141118-091013-33013740.jpg

Which I ate with fried eggs (not pretty but very delicious!)

20141120-065733-25053758.jpg

Tuesday was an aubergine and olive sauce with pasta (using 2 cups of this Tomato Sauce). This did for dinner and one lunch but there was enough pasta and sauce left over so I’ve mixed it up and frozen it for a pasta bake next week.

20141120-065734-25054538.jpg

Wednesday was taco chilli, which I ate with cheese and greek yoghurt (my go to sub for sour cream)

20141120-065735-25055349.jpg

Thursday, is always make it up as you go night anyway, and this was a vegetable thing, using an onion, 3 carrots, 2 peppers, some frozen veg, chickpeas and the rest of the tomato sauce from Tuesday) which I ate with tortillas from the freezer.

20141121-092625-33985790.jpg

Friday I ate at Kathy and Adam’s ’cause I was babysitting.

Breakfast was yoghurt and pear honey (although there were pain au raisin on Monday and Friday!). Lunch was leftovers, lentils on Monday and Thursday, pasta thing on Wednesday and veg and chickpea stew thing on Friday.

It was useful to do and it made me think about the way I shop and eat, because this weekend is also busy, I’m not going to do a big shop this week either, I will need at some point to buy some fresh fruit and vegetables but it’s been nice to use what’s there. Next week, I have a rough plan for next week, Ma’s coming over on Saturday so I’m making lentil cottage pie, I’m going to make some soup (probably something like this) with the butternut squash in the veg basket, there’s a pasta bake, stock, meat, pizza dough and peas, sweetcorn and green beans in the freezer. I also have yoghurt, eggs and plenty of cheese in the fridge. I’ll make a loaf of bread too. I will have to do a bigger shop next weekend because the family is coming over for lunch next Sunday for Ma’s birthday, but I feel that there’s lots of food to keep me going and I’m enjoying finding out how long I can go without shopping!

Friday Night Cocktail

One of the stand out drinks when we went to the Sipsmith 100 Martini Bar, was the Suffragette.20141016-105021-39021155.jpgI really liked it (and it wasn’t my drink!), but I don’t currently have any sloe gin in the house but I was keen to try it with the plum gin because it seemed like it would be good substitute.

I made it according to the original Sipsmith recipe of 25ml plum gin, 25 ml dry vermouth and 25 ml sweet vermouth.

Unfortunately, the plum gin is much lighter than the sloe and couldn’t stand up to the vermouth. So I just used more gin and less vermouth. Because of the change of ingredients and quantities, I’ve decided to give it a new name. So this week’s drink is called The Huzzah. In case you’re wondering, it’s from The Suffragette Scandal by Courtney Milan. At the beginning of the book our heroine tells the hero how to correctly pronounce the word suffragette:

“Suffragette,” she said, “is pronounced with an exclamation point at the end. Like this: ‘Huzzah! Suffragettes!'”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAWhat

30ml plum gin

10ml sweet vermouth

10ml dry vermouthOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAHow

1. Put all three ingredients in a mixing glass filled with ice.

2. Stir until well chilled.

3.Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon twist.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Friday Links

Happy Friday! This week felt busier than it should have been but hurrah, I’m at the end of it and I get Saturday to lie in and then sort my living space out because on Sunday I’m at Oli’s birthday party and Monday Ma finally moves, so I’ll be taking furniture apart and putting it back together!

This week’s links….

1. This makes me sad. Plymouth Gin to ditch it’s geographical indication

2. Lauren Lavern on being a ‘digital immigrant’

3. This is worth watching. Britain isn’t Eating.

4. Toddlers and touch screens.

5. File this under things you didn’t know and maybe didn’t need to. Why no one can design a better speculum.

6. You’re not Type A, you’re just rude…

7. It’s a bit snowy in the US right now!

8. Whole Foods in Detroit.

9. I knew that the US taxed all of it’s citizens regardless of where they lived (it’s like my mother taught me, with privilege comes responsibility) but I didn’t know that Boris Johnson held and US passport although  I am entirely unsurprised to find that he’s a tax dodger!

Basic Tomato Sauce

Does anyone need a recipe for tomato sauce? I’ve eaten a lot of bad tomato sauce, so I would say yes. This the sauce I use when I just want a thicker tomato sauce. Most often I just mix it in with pasta but it’s useful to have around for adding to other things, on top of a baked potato or mixed into some cooked veg to make a really quick sauce for something. Sometimes simple is good.

These two ingredients are the basis and you can add anything you like from there. I usually add a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar.

20141120-065653-25013703.jpg

Put in a pan and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes until you have a thick sauce and use accordingly.

20141120-065654-25014493.jpg

This week, I used it to make an aubergine and olive sauce for pasta.
