Monday Miscellany: Cheese for your needs

Happy Monday!I had a lovely Christmas week, Christmas Eve we decorated the tree, Christmas Day we went up to Shefford and had a lovely time, there was food, drink, fun. Once the littlest nephew was in bed, we played bingo. Ben didn’t want to play but called the numbers. And was hilarious! ‘Bennie’s bingo, where we have cheese for your needs and wine to make you feel fine!’On Boxing Day Ma and I went home and on Thursday we all met up again at my Aunt Jude’s.

Friday was a working from home day, which was good because I caught a cold. Friday was also the day my glasses snapped in two. That was the last straw, I’m not blind but I’m completely reliant on my glasses and contact lenses. I’d only had them for 4 months, I took them into the opticians on Saturday and they put the lenses into a duplicate frame and didn’t charge me because they shouldn’t have done that. Thank goodness for good customer service from Specsavers!

The rest of the weekend was very quiet and today is another working from home day and the last day of the year. I have my usual plans for NYE but I do need to pop into see the godchildren who are 18 today. It is a cliche but it’s true, the days crawl but the years fly by…

Friday Links: Quiet

It’s the time between Christmas and New Year where things that happen don’t get reported much and I don’t read newspapers much. So these links are from before Christmas and I’ll get to the mess that this week unleashed on us next week!

You can’t serve Trump and America

Trump Forces Defense Secretary Mattis to Leave by Jan. 1, Will Replace Him With Deputy He’s such a bloody child…

‘Rough Sex’ Doesn’t Kill, Domestic Violence Does. This whole case makes me so angry. He caused damage to an artery in her vagina with a trigger spray bottle, he broke bones in her face….that’s not kink, that’s violation. And he got away with it. I don’t know if I’m more angry at him, the jury, the CPS or the judge, all of them should be ashamed of themselves…

Political figures celebrate Paddy Ashdown’s energy, bravery and humour. He was a leader of the Lib Dems, during the first election I ever voted in and he came to our college as part of the Election campaign, it’s sad for his family and I would direct you to his last tweets, which were quite something…

Monday Miscellany: The Night Before Christmas

It’s Monday and it’s Christmas Eve, so it’s almost over!

I’m working from home today, which means that I’ll get to listen to Carols from Kings which is when I actually start to feel that it’s really Christmas because at that point, there is nothing more to be done…

There is a certain pattern to my weekly posts, music on Sunday, allotment on Wednesdays and links on Friday but there is also a couple of annual posts and for the past couple of years, there’s been this. This was always the last track played by Russell Davies on his R2 show before Christmas, I love it so much that it was always the last track on the Christmas CD and it’s just the right thing to listen to before going to bed tonight.

Sunday Music: Blue Christmas – Willie Nelson

I was all set to do Blue Christmas by Elvis but realised that I’d already done it. (go and have a listen!) I stand by my assessment that it’s the best version but I’m also quite fond of the Willie Nelson version, he sounds almost cheerful about being miserable….

Recommendations: Lavender Bath Salts

I’ve written before about how useful a daily bath has been in my quest for better sleep and easier mornings.

I went from bath oil to epsom salts. There are lots of bath salts recipes on the internet, this one from Wholefully is pretty fancy, but I like to keep it simple.

I bought 10 kilos. That lives in the cupboard and I transfer to a 2 litre jar and add most of a bottle of lavender essential oil for use every day.  I use the cup as a measure and put two cups per bath, that’s an espresso cup so you have an idea of size.It helps me relax and sleep better, it also makes my skin feel good. At the moment with Christmas stress upon us, who couldn’t do with a nice relaxing bath?

Friday Links: All I want for Christmas is another referendum…

I missed links last week mostly because I was busy but also because the news at the moment is not to put to fine a point on it, bonkers and depressing…So extra links next week as there is a possibility that there will be no links next Friday because no news really happens over Christmas…we’ll see.

Guys, it’s 108 shopping days till Brexit, and we’re grabbing maces. This is funny and I have to laugh or I’ll cry…

Still have your childhood teddy? The psychological power of the toys we keep Interesting, I don’t know what mine was, I suspect it was ‘winnow’ I was obsessed by the ribbon on my blanket when I was little. The cuddly toy I still have is ‘Jemima’ but I remember being given her and we were living at North End Road so I would have been at least four. In times of stress I still squeeze her paws!

This came from Sarah. Londoners troll New York Times with deluge of ‘petty crimes’. British putdowns. It’s the newspaper equivalent of people criticising your family….we can talk shit all we like about our city but NYT, the less you say, the more you’ll shine.

Hollywood Still Doesn’t Know What to Make of Childless Women I have a lot of issues with this film, largely because it reduces Elizabeth’s achievements down to this and makes Mary the hero. Mary managed eight years in Scotland and it didn’t go well, she ran to England and then spent 18 years imprisoned but plotting against Elizabeth before Elizabeth had her executed. By contrast, Elizabeth managed to rule England for over 40 years. Did she have her faults? Yes, she was a bloody Tudor and probably not that nice of a person, but she defied the odds impressively. She should have properly named an heir because then James Stuart became King of England and it must be something about the Stuarts because 40 years later we had a civil war… To reduce Elizabeth to bitter jealously because she didn’t have a child. (I’ve actually read theories about her being the Virgin Queen because she was afraid of the loss of control and possible death that being married and bearing children at that time would have entailed. Which makes a lot of sense, her mother and a stepmother were beheaded by her father, two of her stepmothers died in childbirth, her sister died bitter and alone because she couldn’t have a child. The only successful role model she had for not being bossed by men was Anne of Cleves….) It’s poor and quite sexist…

The cult of ‘smellness’: what’s behind the extraordinary rise in sales of scented candles?. Interesting, I was given three scented candles for my birthday (from M&S) and the only scent that stuck was the ginger and grapefruit. The others, I’m using as part of my ‘golden hour’ bath. When they have all burned down, I’m going to use the pots to make some lavender scented candles. The ginger and grapefruit candles are usually in the living room but at the moment I’m all about the Mandarin, Cinnamon & Clove scented candles which is a special Christmas scent but is just lovely and cosy for winter.

Allotment Adventures: Catching Up

So I missed this last week and I’m getting hassle about being slack, so time for a plot catch up. This is easy to do because we didn’t go to the plot this weekend due to the weather. Saturday was windy and rainy and so we had a rest.

The week before though we were busy because there was lots of weeding to do. Not in the beds, which were fine but around the edges of the plot which was looking a bit messy

Then we discovered the pile of woodchip and I decided that we should put some more at the top of the plot. This is for several reasons, the soil up there has been exposed for a while and needs some love, it looks better and the warm autumn has meant that the bulbs and rhubarb think it’s spring and are putting their heads ups which won’t be good if there’s a frost. So after we weeded, we mulched.I also decided that it was time to sort the ‘path’ by the shed. We have decided that we need to abandon the hillbilly patio because the pallets haven’t survived the weather that well so we’ll just use pavers and find something else to do with the pallets. We also had winter inspection of the plots and passed. I still get nervous but I also know that do have a very tidy plot and even the bits that need work are in pretty tidy in comparison to other plots despite my rogue self seeding coriander. We are at the part of the year where not much is happening and we start to plan. Ma and I did talk about the problem of the raspberries. They take up so much space and really mess with moving around the plot. Joe plants in rows and that doesn’t really work if you have repurposed the plot for raised beds. They also feature the last of the pipes on the plot which are rusty and really need to come up.

So I’m sort of thinking that we dig them all up and make two bigger beds for other things, we would then replant some of them in one of the long beds at the bottom of the plot and use one of the other long beds for autumn raspberries. I’m going to look at moving some of them over the next couple of months doing the digging up and making new beds later in the  summer, it really depends on the kind of winter and spring we have…

On the slate for next week is buying more compost and finish closing all the fallow beds…but if the weather is foul, all bets are off.
