Goals Recap, Goals Set – November/December 2017

November managed to be both better and worse that I expected. Better because only one migraine and it was generally not as gloomy as usual, worse because looking for a job is hard on my ego and introvert brain. I’ve had 4 interviews, 2 rejections and 2 that I’m waiting on. It’s frustrating and lots of other things.

So let’s look at the goals

  • 10,000 steps a day Done! This was easier than expected, I averaged 12,316 steps a day and there were days when I didn’t make 10,000 a day but over the month I’m happy with that for a first month.
  • 30 days of yoga More than less yoga – 20 out of 30 days.
  • Finish the cross-stitch – barely looked at it this month but I will finish it for Christmas
  • Tidy out the chest of drawers in the living room – done, it took about half an hour
  • Clean under the bed. Done, which is good because the new bed is coming after Christmas…
  • Reach out and start really looking for work – doing this, doesn’t feel like I’m getting anywhere but it’s happening.
  • I’m going to help at the foodbank on Monday afternoon – I’ve snapped all my nails and hauled more tins of chickpeas than I thought possible..

The Allotment

  • paint the shed  – nope, when I’ve had the time it’s been raining, when it’s been clear, I haven’t had the time.
  • cover the beds that aren’t being used – done
  • garlic and broad beans in  – we decided not to do garlic this year but the broad beans are in
  • burn some rubbish – it’s been too wet to burn
  • cut back and dig up the raspberries  – not done, again it’s been a time versus weather thing.

The plan for December is pretty similar to November. So 10,000 steps a day, stretch/yoga every day and do all the daily stuff I’ve been doing.

Additionally, I need to sort out the living room for the the tree, sort out the music and photos on the new mac, write Christmas cards and post them by the 15 December, and sort out Christmas presents by the 20 December.

It’s the last month of year so I need to make it count.

Friday Links

Happy Friday! We are now officially in December, and thus Christmas music can be played! Tomorrow I will be at Ginvent drinking all of the gin, so December is off to a good start…

I should also point out that links will more or less (this being my only comment on it) be a royal engagement free zone. It’s not being a killjoy, I’m a republican, I don’t get the fuss, anymore than I would with any other celebrity wedding. Also what is the bloody point of them if we don’t get a bank holiday?

The state of the world worries me right now, I’m worried enough by the idiots that are in power here but the ones in the US are even worse…Theresa May rebukes Trump as opposition to state visit grows

Should work be a baby-free zone?. Yes, I object to people bringing babies into the office. Should employers/govt make childcare easier and cheaper and use taxes to pay for that?Yes.

In praise of Smitten Kitchen. I love Deb’s recipes and the second cookbook is on my wish list!

Escape the news with “In Our Time”. My love of “In Our Time” is well known and documented. It’s always fascinating and Melvyn Bragg is on my list of people who I’d like to be adopted by!

Best/Worst – 6 to 12 November 2017

Happy Monday!

Best

Family Time. Time with the people I’m related to for birthday related reasons, time with Ma for allomenting but family time was also Thanksgiving dinner with K & A and walking Fred with Sarah.

Worst

Interview failure. I don’t know why but I didn’t get either job I interviewed for and I haven’t had any real feedback either. Which is pretty disheartening

Honourable mentions to

a walk with Christelle, walking more generally, getting absolutely drenched on the way to the foodbank on Monday, an afternoon on the plot, mastering toad in the hole, food prep, getting around to mopping the floors (I really loathe cleaning floors), small children being silly and just themselves – a small person asking us if I had enjoyed the ‘family meal’ and the youngest nephew’s excitement about cake, champagne for Christmas, some brilliant autumn sunshine, a new passport, nailing pecan pie (it’s been a while), watching the sausage motivated Fred, bacon sandwiches after walking Fred (Justin is great!), over 100,000 steps in a week and handling being upset and full of PMT in healthy ways.

Happy Friday!

This interview with Michelle Dockery, it’s not that I loved Downton Abbey but she’s only two years out from her fiance dying and I just really feel for her, remembering how terrible I felt two years after Stef died, I know that it’ll get better (I’m proof of that) but it sucks and I really feel for her.

The clothes I’ve loved – and reduced to rags. This could be me, I love my clothes to bits until they fall to bits.

The bank of Mum and Dad. I’m going to say it again, this isn’t just about millennials. I’m 44 and couldn’t do it. It’s been a problem for working class kids for over 20 years, it’s only getting traction now middle class kids can’t do it!

How fake news works: Millions of Americans would flunk basic civics. This and before we go getting all proud that it wouldn’t happen here. It already has, just take a look at the Brexit debates and the referendum. The money that we were going to have, the fact we’re in this mess because of an advisory referendum. The amount of people that don’t vote. Yeah it’s us too…

Bad language is good for you. I’m going to keep telling myself that…

Have the gin jokes gone too far? Yes, I love that there are lots of new gins out there and that I don’t have to walk into a pub and order something other than a gin and tonic because I will not drink Gordons. However, we are in danger of jumping the shark here!

Grandad

Today would be my Grandad’s 103rd birthday, which means that it’s been just under 20 years since he died. I loved my Grandad, he was a good grandparent in the best sense, I know that one day Oli and Joe will feel the same way about Ma as their Grandma.

He wasn’t perfect but he did all the right Grandad things, and I am aware that he wasn’t a perfect human being but I loved him.

Grandad on the blog mostly lives through his bread pudding recipe but I’ve been scanning some photos so this seemed like the right time to break them out…

Sometime between 1938 and 1945 and yes my brother does really look like him….This is his wedding photo which places it in 1944, I think, if I’m wrong Ma will tell me (hi Ma!). That’s Iris, my grandma and she and my Mum have the same shaped hands (genetics are strange and marvellous) I have no idea when this is but this is my great-grandad Hull, my great aunt Phylis, Grandad, my great aunt Edith and my great aunt Ada. One of the things I didn’t really understand until he died was that he was a big brother as well as my Grandad. This is my first communion, that’s Jan, Dad, Grandad and my uncle Mick. Grandad wore a suit, he probably complained about the amount of times he had to get up and down during Mass too, this was a regular feature of Grandad at Mass, Salvation Army services did not really go in for bells and smells and kneeling but I know that he was pleased that Ma and by extension, Ben and I had come back to Jesus. Grandad’s influence on my faith was gentle but strong. Grandad didn’t preach but he was a great model of faith, especially when it’s hard and especially when you fail. When I was confirmed we had to do some form of ‘service’ which is how I ended up  ‘helping’ in a Sally Ann youth group once a week until I was 19.

This is the first Christmas after we moved out of Fulham and the first Christmas without my Dad. This is a much more typical Grandad picture. He was 80, we had been to Mass in the morning. I still have that armchair, but had to have it reupholstered. It has a throw on it in this photo because Grandad’s brylcreem had done for the original material. Yes,  I know he had almost no hair but what he had was always slicked down!

Happy Friday!

Oh come on, this is getting farcical. Priti Patel held undisclosed meetings in Israel.  Then she was forced to resign, I would have sacked her. Also Theresa May should just say sod it and start sacking people who don’t/can’t/won’t follow the rules…I’m talking about Boris. If she’s in such a weak position at least go out fighting…

Allotment Adventures: Getting a bit chilly

Last week didn’t only mark the beginning of November but maybe the beginning of cold weather. It has been getting colder, on the plot you can see it in what’s coming off the plot, as my allotment neighbour put it after October “it’s all green and leafy”.

This year I tried to plan better for overwintering vegetables and have kale, chard and black radishes doing well. There are leeks too but I seem to be plagued by leek problems, there’s rust and now allium leaf miner next year they are going under mesh but that’s how it goes.

So with the weather approaching, this week was about putting things to bed. We took up the marigolds and nasturtiums but left the cosmos for a bit.

We covered three more beds for winter, all of those beds need compost/manure but we can’t leave anything uncovered because the foxes have a field day digging otherwise! We also sowed broad beans, we’ve been on the look out for garlic but unless I order it online, can get any and with the rust issue, decided that we’d leave it this year.

I took up all of the salad leaves, so this is the last sinkful of salad for this seasonwe also harvested chard and kale.and found out that there had been a delivery of woodchip, so took the opportunity to add to the paths. There’s quite a bit to do to this month but we’re in good shape.
