Sweaty Betty

On Sunday, Ma and I went for a run. It wasn’t a great success, but we did it. I normally run in very old tracksuit bottoms and t-shirts, it’s a look, not a good one but a look. My underpinnings – trainers, sports bra, knee sleeves and socks are where I spend the money, those things make the most difference to my running experience, so that’s where my focus is. However, running in cotton clothes can lead to chaffing and Ma has some lovely running stuff from Sweaty Betty.

Yesterday, she took me there and bought me a top and some bottoms. I can’t say that I look fabulous in them, but they are comfortable to run in and the trousers don’t feel like they are going to fall down. Now I have to run to justify the clothes…

Thanks Ma..

The Heavy

So this week, the shuffle function on the phone is obsessed with The Heavy. In fairness, this is because I just finally got around to updating the music on the phone. Anyway, The Heavy, they’re great…

Nephew update

Ma and I looked after Olly on Sunday. After a bad start (closing the door on us and saying ‘no’ very firmly), he came around and we went into Watford for some lunch, Olly walked, well he doesn’t really walk, he runs and gets quite excited. Thank goodness for reins (I know that some people don’t approve but I’m a big fan, it allows them freedom to walk but at the same time they can’t run off or get too much in the way of others. Also the more toddlers walk, the more likely they are to sleep at night!!)

He had a cold and was tired and a bit grumpy (which accounts for the face above). He didn’t really get happy until bath time when we read the ‘I love my fish’ book about 20 times and Olly’s favourite word changed from ‘no’ to ‘again’.

Ben and Lu had a good afternoon and reported that it felt really strange to be out without Olly! On Monday, I missed hearing Olly saying, “what’s this?” every time he came across something new…

Greenbelt photos

I was only at Greenbelt for 2 days this year and missed so much good stuff but it was fun despite not getting to see much.

The Tiny Tea Tent got bigger and was still full

Yearn, the Grace service I got to be at was great (I would say that, wouldn’t I?). It was a re-do of a service done earlier in the year and I’d missed it so I didn’t really know what to expect. It was about the Prodigal Son, Forgiving Father, Cross Elder Brother*. I’ve always felt for the elder brother in the story and the service put a completely different spin on it for me. I loved Dean and Esther taking on the roles and discussing the situation, Dean as the elder brother, saying “you left and you destroyed Dad and took away my options, he was in bits, I had to stay” and Esther as the younger, pointing out that she didn’t know that, didn’t feel needed and didn’t ask for a party, so could he “please stop being an idiot and come in and have a drink!” The liturgy is here (although for the Greenbelt service we took out the swearing)

*delete as you wish.

Set up, Lis, Dwayne and the inflatable sofa…

Before

After

During the service we asked people to talk about home and using either pictures or words to write what it meant and to put them on a fridge (like fridge magnets..)

Came home on Saturday night and the rest of the weekend is another post…

Pro-Choice

I woke up this morning, thinking that I would post about Greenbelt, looking after Olly and the joy of sleeping in a bed after 2 nights camping.

Instead I woke up to this news story in the Guardian.

I know that not many people read this blog but apart from my mother and Max (hi guys!), I don’t really know who does. So this might offend you and if it does then I’m sorry but I’m not sorry for my opinions.

First, let’s get this straight. I’m pro-choice, not pro-abortion. If I could prevent the 200,000 abortions that happen in the UK each year I would. Abortion is not a good thing, it is a necessary thing. This is why.

Women don’t have abortions to make themselves feel good. They don’t (as a general rule) use them as a form of contraception. They have them because they feel that they can’t continue with a pregnancy.

It could be there is something wrong with the foetus, it could be they already have children and feel that another would tip them over the edge financially or emotionally and negatively affect the lives of the children they already have, it could be that having a child is something they aren’t emotionally or financially able to cope with, it could be that they were raped or abused and they don’t want to have the child of their abuser. It could be lots of things and it doesn’t really matter what the reasons are. They should have the right to choose to continue or to terminate their pregnancy.

This is what I know, if a woman wants to terminate a pregnancy, she will risk her life trying to do that and if a woman really wants to continue with a pregnancy she will risk her life trying to do that too. I know women who have done both. (One before abortion was legal and one after)

As an adult woman she has the right to choose which. She is the person that has to carry a baby to term, to deal with the opinions of others on her pregnancy (I’m always shocked to see that once you are pregnant, complete strangers feel they have the right to touch bumps and tell them not to drink coffee, smoke, have a glass of wine etc), to go through labour and she is generally the person that the burden of childcare falls upon on.

It’s her choice. Not yours. Not mine.

Of course some women have abortions and regret it. That’s sad and I’m sorry for them. However, no decision in life is without regret. Some people wish they they had never been married, does the government insist that every person have counselling before they get married. It seems not. 76% of people in the UK are pro-choice. 200,000 women seek abortions every year. They are all offered counselling and despite what Nadine Dorries claims, it is impartial, you are given other options. I know this because I had an abortion (one that I paid for) and I was encouraged to discuss other options and told that if I was in anyway unsure then I should go away and think about it.

Women should be able to make the choice without fear, they may regret those choices later, but that’s what life is.

If you live in the UK and feel that this change is wrong, do something about it. Here’s the then www.abortionrights.org.uk is the place to start.

Sunday Music

So in case you haven’t noticed, I’ve been at Greenbelt this week. Which had me thinking about last year and my two musical highlights. One was Foy Vance but the other was Ugly Duckling..

Greenbelt 2011, from a campsite far, far away…

It’s rained quite a bit but I’ve finally had a night on site where I was warm enough to sleep! Hurrah. Also Kathy gave me some amazing earplugs so I couldn’t hear the rain, that was nice too.

Inspiration

I came across this a while ago and I’ve been showing it to practically everyone.  It made an impact on me and I think that it’s wise. I love the description of courage as telling the story of you with your whole heart. Words to remember.

Brené Brown also has a blog.

All worth thinking about.

Cookies..

Today I’m on my way to Cheltenham for Greenbelt. The weather forecast is not good and I’m going to be in a tent. My camping skills are not great (there’s no where to plug in a fridge for ice or a hairdryer!) and I’m relying on the loveliness of the people I’m camping with to help me with putting tent up so it stays up through the predicted thunderstorms on Friday night. So I’m going to bribe them with cookies! These cookies, chocolate cherry cookies…
