Weekend Tasklist

Four days into the New Year and my life reverts back to reality! So the tasklist is back and my need to sort the flat and myself out so that next week goes smoothly.

Why? Because next week is a full five days at work and EVERYBODY with a job is back at work doing it, which means some of them will need/want me to do things, it’s almost like they expect me to work! Also I seem to be a bit poorly again. It’s not a cold, I thought it might be but I just feel really rubbish and like someone is standing on my chest. Not a fun sensation! Now it could be nothing and it might just go away over the weekend but last year’s brush with bronchitis has made me a little bit paranoid, so I want to make sure that I have clean clothes for next week, that the flat is tidy and that I know what I’m eating and that it needs minimal effort. That way if I am sick and it’s horrible, I can get through the week doing the bare minimum. I have a menu plan, a house plan and all I need to do is tick the jobs off one by one!

Kitchen

  • General clean (sort out the recycling and rubbish, mopping the floor and general cleaning)

Cooking

  • Cook lentils
  • make sourdough bread
  • Strain yoghurt
  • Make blueberry compote
  • Make hummus
  • Roast chickpeas

Bathroom

  • General clean (mop floor, change towels, empty bin, clean bath, sink and toilet)

Bedroom

  • General clean (sweep floor, dust, general tidy)

Living Room

  • General clean (sweep floor, dust, tidy sofa, put things away etc)
  • Take the tree and Christmas decorations down on Sunday.

Hall

  • Hoover, lots and lots of hoovering of pine needles

General things

  • Shopping
  • Washing (clothes wash, white wash, towel wash)
  • Ironing
  • Wash make up brushes
  • Wash hairbrushes
  • Water plants
  • Back up laptop
  • Charge kindle and camera batteries
  • Put Christmas decorations in cupboard
  • Put some boxes in the loft
  • Pick up dry cleaning

Happy Friday!

20131219-095847.jpg

I hope you’ve had a good week, I’m slightly discombobulated because of the day off on Wednesday but pleased that I got to spend some time with Jo and Ms T! It’s time get back to normal after the lovely Christmas madness. Plans this weekend include taking down the tree, lunch with Christelle and Mike, time with the godchildren, who turned 13 this week (it really doesn’t seem that long ago!), I’m hoping that the weather is good enough to go for a  walk too but I don’t really hold out that much hope for that!

Anyway I hope you have a lovely weekend, here’s the stuff I thought was worth sharing this week!

1) Laurie Penny on what happened when her father died. Everybody experiences the death of the people we love differently, but we survive and live and breathe after because of the people around us that are still here. So she’s nailed that!

2) Do we still need the Foreign Office? Jo says yes but I suspect she might be biased, given that she works for them!

3) Northern Ireland is going to be hard hit by austerity. Although sometimes, ok most of the time, I just want to bang their heads together and tell them to grow up!

4)Don’t go dry for January, resolve to drink better alcohol instead!

Chorizo, Bean and Barley Stew

Today, most people are going back to work after Christmas and New Year. The tubes are crowded again and everybody is slightly grumpy about being back at work and having to adjust to being up early again.

I worked over Christmas and New Year and have been slightly grumpy about that all the way through so today doesn’t mark the start of being back at work but it does mark the start of my getting back into a routine. Work will be busier today, there will be more people in the office and I’ll have to be in by 9am rather than the 9.30am I’ve been getting away with for the last couple of working days.

My eating habits need to get back on track too. I’ve loved Christmas and enjoyed the treats and chocolate, but I really need to eat food that’s good for me as well as tasting good!

Lots of blogs that I read are based in the US and I love the idea of eating black eyed peas for good fortune in the coming year. So I decided to do something similar. I soaked 205g black eyed turtle beans overnight and then rinsed them and bunged them in the slow cooker with a tin of chopped tomatoes and 250g of chorizo that I’d sliced up, I added a bit more water and left it on high for about 6 hours. Then I added a couple of handfuls of pearl barley and left it for about half an hour. Lastly, I dumped a bag of sliced up winter greens and left it for another half an hour.

Not the prettiest dinner and the quick phone snap of it isn’t doing it any favours but it’s hearty, easy to make and tastes great. It would happily serve 4 greedy people, so I’ll be eating it for lunches for a little while!

2014

A New Year.

I always thought that the New Year comes at the wrong time. I think the accountants have it right and a New Year should start in Spring, not in the depths of winter. It’s also hard to celebrate the end of the year and the beginning of a new one, in the middle of Christmas and I am still in Christmas, the tree doesn’t come down until the weekend when Christmas ends.

20131223-093816.jpgHowever, the calendar, tradition and everyone else disagrees with me and today is the first day of 2014.

Last year, I set goals. This year I’m not going to.

I did think about it, I thought of all the things I could push myself to do and then I decided that I really couldn’t be doing with it.

Yes, I am a naturally indolent person and no I’m not too bothered about it any more. I used to be and I’ve spent a lot of my life beating myself up over my ‘inability’ to motivate myself and be a grown up, responsible and active person. This year I’ve decided to stop doing that.

photo

2013 marked the year where I realised that I really like who I am and I really don’t care if anyone else does or not. It was the year when I stopped trying to be who I thought I should be and got happy about being who I was and at 40 years old it was way past time.

photo

So this year, I want more of that. I want to read more books, spend more time with my friends, drink more cocktails, laugh more, live the best life I can and be completely unapologetic about it.

So this year, there are no goals, no plans, no reflection on last year and no grand visions for this. There is a word. Enjoy.

This year, I’m just going to enjoy my life and do the very best I can with it.

NYE plans

I’ve been asked a couple of times today, if I have plans for this evening. My answer to this is a horrified no. I am to old for the ‘It’s NYE, I must do something and not be alone, it’s the best time of the year’ madness that seizes people on 31st December.

However, it did occur to me that I do have plans. With myself.

This is the plan. See L & H and wish them happy birthday. Go home. Potter about a bit, change bed, eat steak, drink champagne, change into my new jammies (thanks Ma!) listen to the radio, maybe watch a movie, drink some more champagne, read a bit, wait until midnight to see if neighbours are going to set their garden on fire with a candle lantern thingamebob for the 3rd year in a row. Go to bed in the nice clean bed.

There is nothing worse than sitting indoors, alone when you want to be out and with other people. However and without being melodramatic about it, there are about 10 people in the world that I could happily spend NYE with but I either see them on New Years Day (Ma!) or they all have partners and I’m allergic to being a gooseberry on NYE, that is depressing, I start missing Stef and generally being ‘why am I alone’ about my life and I refuse to spend the last hours of the old year and the first hours of the new being miserable about my life, because my life is good.

So I stay at home and spend quality time with myself and laugh at the neighbours setting fire to things. I feel that it’s a positive choice and it suits my introverted ways…

So folks, what are your plans? Allergic to the parties or spending NYE partying like you just don’t care?

2013

On the last day of 2013, it’s probably time to think about how it went. I think it’s been a pretty good year.

photoIt’s not been a momentous year, yes, I turned 40, so if people could stop asking for ID when I try to buy wine or chocolates with alcohol in them (happened to me this weekend!) that would be good.

20130803-124745.jpgI went on holiday in April and didn’t in September.

Some stuff wasn’t great though, in July, Tina died and I know that I’ll never quite get used to a world that doesn’t have her in it, I’m grateful to have known her and the best tribute I can give her, is to get on with the job of living.

What I’ve Read – December 2013

Black Heart – Holly Black

The last of the Curse Workers books. I really enjoyed them, I liked that there is no absolute good or bad and while I don’t think it’s a happy ending really, I like that it worked out. I also liked the way that what is normal for the world in the book would be off for real life. Always wearing gloves so that bare hands were shocking, it also meant that I spent a bit of time thinking how much that would suck and how smart phones would never have been invented!

Across a Star Swept Sea – Diana Peterfreund

Having loving For the Darkness Shows the Stars. Loved. I knew that a book set in the same world  but loosely based on The Scarlet Pimpernel instead of my beloved Persuasion, was going to be good but not as good as FTDSTS because it’s not FTDSTS! I really enjoyed it, there was a bit too much show not tell for me, but I liked it, I liked Justen and I liked Persis and I liked that as with FTDSTS there were left over things. The world wasn’t perfectly resolved because the main characters admitted they were attracted to each other.

The Bucolic Plague – Josh Kilmer-Purcell

This made me laugh out loud on the train in the morning. Easy and fun to read, I loved it, I loved that ultimately Kilmer-Purcell doesn’t take himself too seriously. In the book, he points out that the ‘story’ in a set of truths and I like that they made it work but also that he was honest about how manufactured ‘the perfect life’ is. It really made me want an allotment again!

This Boy – Alan Johnson

I’ve been meaning to read this for a while. Alan Johnson is a couple of years younger than my parents and grew up in West London. It’s not that far away from where my parents (and I) grew up, and know the areas that he’s talking about, that with some other stuff (he was born in the same hospital as my parents, his mother was cremated Kensal Green two years after my grandmother was, he’s a QPR fan) make it very ‘there but for the grace of God’ for me. He was 13 when his mother died, my mum was 14, so when he talks about his school not really being interested in the fact that his mother had died, I can believe it because of what I know of how my mother’s school responded when her mum died. Johnson is very straightforward about how awful his childhood was but he is rarely self pitying and he’s much nicer about his father than I would manage to be in similar circumstances. It’s not just about that though, Johnson is describing a world that’s gone a child growing up in those circumstances now, wouldn’t be able to end up as a cabinet minister. Worth reading.

The Bane Chronicles (6 to 9) – Cassandra Clare et al

I finally caught up on these. I like them, I like the backstory they give to Magnus and to the Shadowhunters world. This weekend when I was slightly brain dead, I liked that they were easy to read! They are probably only worth reading if you like the other books set in that world!

Hidden – Kelly Armstrong

Another short story and easy read. I gave up on the Otherworld series round about book 9 but it was nice to jump in for a short story!

Weekend off..

This is usually the point of the week, where I post a list of housework-y tasks but it is Christmas and we’re in the part of the year that’s a bit floaty and not quite like normal life, so I’m giving myself a break.

20131219-095847.jpg

This weekend, the only things I have to do are make sure that I have clothes to wear and food to eat next week. Other than that, I’m going to spend some quiet time doing exactly what I want to do and not being too concerned about completing a to-do list.

Have a good weekend, chaps and if you’d like, please tell me what your weekend plans are…

Friday Links

Hello, it is Friday even though it feels like the weekend, I’m working today and I have a feeling I’m going to get a lot done because there won’t be any interruptions or emails to deal with!

I hope everyone had the Christmas that they wanted to have. I did! I got to spend two days with my families. My actual family on Christmas Day and the people that have become family on Boxing Day. It was lovely, I didn’t over eat or drink but even so, I feel like I could do with a rest from food and alcohol for at least a couple of days!

Links aren’t plentiful this week, I’ve hardly been near a computer since Tuesday..

1) Tom Watson is angry, so am I…

2) A cocktail a day is good for you! Told you so..

3) What do you eat on Christmas Eve? We have fish pie but because we like it, not because it’s a Catholic thing!

4) Perhaps atheism is an intellectual luxury for the wealthy. The last couple of paragraphs sum up my problem with Richard Dawkins, worth a read.

5) You are not a pet parent but a pet owner. Quite..
