Friday Night Cocktail

The idea of something with gin and grapefruit and rosemary has been floating around my head for a while, it’s not a very original idea but I my love of gin is well known and I’ve become slightly obsessed with grapefruit at the moment. So this seemed like a good way of combining the two.

So this weekend, I made some rosemary syrup. A cup of water, a cup of caster sugar, a bunch of rosemary. Heat until the sugar has dissolved and leave the rosemary to steep for about 3 hours. Strain and put in the fridge.

This is what I ended up with. I originally used pink grapefruit and that was great but I actually ended up preferring white grapefruit.  You can also make the drink and then divide into two champagne flutes and top up with fizz for something more festive!

What

50ml gin

120ml grapefruit juice

50ml rosemary syrup

How

Shake with ice

Strain into a rocks glass. Garnish with rosemary.

Friday Links

Happy Friday, it’s been a busy week, I’m glad to get to the end of it, especially as today I’m on holiday. I’ve been up since ridiculous o’clock, I still think I suck at packing but I’m as done as I’m going to be.

This weeks links!

1) Food banks and why they are wrong. Or what the Prime Minister doesn’t understand.

2) Why is the coalition making a public spectacle of picking on the poor? I think because they can and the Daily Mail likes it.

3) Gary Younge on President Obama. Which reminds me, I need to borrow the Johnson biographies from Ma!

4) Ikea are discontinuing Expedit shelves. Funny, Ryan and I were talking about Ikea furniture the other day. He used to tease me that my house looked like an Ikea showroom, now my house doesn’t but his does. It’s what you do in your 20’s I think! For the record, I don’t own any Expedit shelves, mine are all Billy!

5) Zoe Williams nails the issues with the Daily Mail’s ‘story’ about Harriet Harman and Jack Dromey.

6) Who really benefits from Housing Benefits. The issue of housing in this country drives me bananas. For those of you who think that living on benefits is the easy option and the money goes straight into the hands of the claimants think again. I did write about how I lived on benefits and if it hadn’t have been for my mum, I’d probably be homeless.

7) This on the plans for longer school days made me a little bit chippy. Her argument makes no sense. Children of working parents do spend more time in the week out of the house than in it, always have done. After school clubs and summer holiday play centres were a part of my childhood. I left the house about 7.30am and some days didn’t get home until gone 8pm. Generally, I walked with Ma to Carol or Debbie’s, then about 8.30 walked to school with the other kids, school was 9ish to 3.30ish, then ‘play centre’ at school until 5.30-6pm. At that point if Ben or I were at Cubs or Brownies, there’d be a mad dash for dinner etc and back to school. I don’t think that it’s any different for children now, except that because after school club costs about £25 a week go to a childminders and/or grandparents. Play centre was fun, there were games and activities if you wanted or if you wanted to sit in a corner with a book, that was find too. It was funded by ILEA, so there wasn’t an issue of whether Ma could afford it, I think you had to pay if you wanted ‘tea’ which was a drink and some biscuits and it cost about 25p. It was what I did, lots of kids with parents at home who didn’t have to go, asked to go because kids like structure and learning playing with their friends. I learnt to sew and take photos and make candles and cook stuff and did ballet because they were activities at play centre. Also it’s worth pointing out that a lot of the kids whose families were worse off than we were went because if you were entitled to free school meals during term time, you’d get them at play centre during the holiday. Yes, children need downtime and no they shouldn’t be over-scheduled but an affordable way of providing working parents with childcare and children with things to do and the opportunity to play with friends is a good thing. This is not a ‘working class parent bad, middle class parent good’ issue, 10 hour days are a reality for most children of working parents and having the school open after school hours and providing places for those children to be is something we used to have until the Tories took it away. It’s still a good idea but it costs money, I have no doubt this is money that that the Govt don’t want to spend so the idea is going nowhere.

8) The pain of moving all your books. We’ve all been there…

What I’ve Read – February 2014

Into the Still Blue – Veronica Rossi

I don’t really have a lot to say about this. I still like the world building but I’m struggling with them finding the perfect place and what about the rest of the world?

Life After Life – Kate Atkinson

I read this on the recommendation from Ma. Thanks Ma! I really enjoyed it eventually, I was getting a bit tired of the ‘darkness fell’ line at the beginning but once I got past that I was hooked. I enjoyed the way that the characters seemed always to stay themselves and of their era.  Go read.

Cross Stitch – Diana Gabaldon

This is about to be made into a TV series and has many sequels and lots of fans but I don’t think I’m one of them. First up it’s ridiculously long and second she pretty much threw the kitchen sink at it. Everything that ‘can’ happen does and it ends up being really contrived. Oh look, our hero is being physically injured again, oh look our heroine is being stupidly feisty again. So we have time travel, English soldiers being brutal (and gay and sadistic), Scots being brave, witch trials, the Loch Ness monster and all sorts of other shenanigans and it just over-stretched credibility and my patience. Apparently apart from the magical elements, it’s well researched historically, I don’t know enough about Scotland in 1743 to know if it is or not but I can’t see that I’m going to pick up any of the others that will take the reader to France (Bonnie Prince Charlie) and finally to America in time for the War of Independence.

Trapped – Michael Northrop

This was Luc’s pick for Half Term bookclub and I really liked it. The premise of a really bad snow storm and 7 kids trapped at school as things get worse is not cheery and the book is really good at pointing that out. Luc said it made him think about his school buildings in a new light. Yep. Tension builds, it doesn’t go all ‘Lord of Flies’ and I really enjoyed it.

Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, Anne of Windy Willows, Anne’s House of Dreams, Anne of Ingleside, Rainbow Valley, Rilla of Ingleside – LM Montgomery

This was Helene’s pick for half term. To my horror I discovered that she hasn’t read all the Anne books, she’s read the Emily books and I think Green Gables and I heavily sold them. Fortunately for me, she reads lots and was happy once through GG to go through all of them. They’re re-reads for me and it was quite nice to read physical books instead of ebooks and I love these books…

Things I want to do next week.

I have today and tomorrow at work and I cannot wait to be done.

I’m finding this quite amusing because I like going on holiday but I haven’t been too excited for this one, probably ’cause it’s already been postponed once already.  Ok, so the weather forecast in DC isn’t fantastic but I’ve ready to be on holiday. Also I found out yesterday that John won’t actually be in the country when I am (this is the problem with doing a job like that, you never know when you’ll be called away and it’s not like it’s not important and you can say no.) However it’s a new city (and country for that matter) that I’ve never seen before and I get to spend some time with Matt which will be just as much fun.

So now I need to work out how I’m going to entertain myself during the day when Matt is working. I’m pretty open about that because I don’t know the city at all but come on it’s the capital city so I’ve started to make a list!

1) Mount Vernon.

Come on, it’s history and it’s fascinating. Also it has a bourbon still.

2) The Smithsonian.

19 museums and a zoo.

3) New Columbia Distillers

They make gin. Of course I want to go.

4) The National Mall

Not going would be like coming to London and not seeing Big Ben (yes I know Big Ben is the bell not the Tower).

5) Library of Congress

Because I can.

6) Sona Creamery

Wine bar that makes it’s own cheese or cheesemongers that also sells wine! I don’t know but I want to visit and I’m sure this is something that Matt and John will have no issue with!

7) Tudor Place

I like old buildings

I’m still toying with the idea of a day in New York or Philadelphia because it’s not that far away, it takes the same amount of time to go to Manchester from London, which I’ve done in a day!

And so far that’s all I’ve come up with, I know there’s a ton of stuff I’ve missed and  I’m hoping that Matt will fill me in on the other things to and see.

Anyone else got any suggestions?

What I’m Eating This Week

Last week, posted about the stuff that I was eating during the week. I’ve talked about menu planning before and showed you how that worked in detail. I’ve also talked about some of the choices I make about my diet and the food I choose to eat and buy. The Day in Food posts are a whole day of what I ate. Long story short there is a lot of stuff about my eating and cooking on this blog. Menu planning has become a natural thing for me to do and I’ve noticed that it’s not as rigid as it used to be, I don’t tend to plan lunches any more because I just tend to eat leftovers and I’ve implemented a ‘leftover night’ in the menu plan just to deal with my ‘over generous’ cooking style and so nowadays I find that I make a couple of things every week and go from there. This is what I’m doing this week.

Breakfast Pots

Freezer Soup

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Lentil Bolognese

This is becoming a staple in my cooking, this week, I’m eating it with pasta and stuffed into mushrooms. Seriously good, in fact so good that even my mother who does not enjoy cooking, has made this a couple of times!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Sourdough

I baked a loaf this week, to go with the soup. As even I struggle to get through a loaf in a week, I suspect that the bulk of it will either go in the freezer or to mum’s on Wednesday night!

20131013-190353.jpg

I only have 4 days to feed myself for this week and I’m eating out on Wednesday night so with the addition of fruit and various vegetables, the soup and the bolognese will also make up my packed lunches too. On Thursday, I’ll probably make a frittata and any remaining vegetables left in the fridge will go into a soup because I can bung that in the freezer and eat when I get home.

What are you eating this week?

The Weekend

The weekend started with theatre. Red Velvet at the Tricycle. I really wanted to like this but I didn’t. The acting was good, the play should have been more interesting than it was. Some of it was funny, some of it was sad and shocking but I just didn’t feel it.

On Saturday, it was sunny. I wore my sunglasses for what feels like the first time in ages.

I was busier on Saturday than I expected to be. I bought proper Cheddar to take to DC with me! Had coffee with Ryan, in his and Claire’s new flat and visited Kathy and Adam and got meet their new kids! They are adorable, but you’ll have to take my word for it! The way adoption works here means that you can’t share the children’s names or photos on social media so no photos but they are really cute and very funny and K & A make great parents and one day they’ll get to sleep again!

On Saturday night, there was pizza and rest, I was in bed at 10pm like the old lady I am!

20140224-091009.jpg

On Sunday, after a long conversation with my brother, which was nice. I did some stuff around the house and some food prep for the week. I got my suitcase out of the cupboard, found my passport and ESTA number, and make some lists. I really can’t emphasise how much I suck at packing and the weather forecast for DC is interesting and features snow, so I have no idea what to pack!

This week is all about getting through it so I can have a holiday. This holiday was due in September and I’m ready for a break!

Sunday Music

Last week, this came on the radio and I called Ma because I knew it’s a song she likes even though I don’t really remember talking about it.

Ma apparently played it to death as a teenage, which also answers the question of why I play songs over and over and over. I come by it honestly!

Friday Links

Happy Friday! I’m so happy to see the end of this week! Here’s this week’s links.

1) A valentine to big govt. Ok this is about the US but I think it applies over here too!

2) Communicating science clearly. Alan Alda is my hero!

3) What soldiers eat.

4) Pictures of the flooding in Somerset.

5) Pound shops are an asset to the high street? Mmm. I can see his argument, the problem I have with it is that I shop in West Ealing and have done since before the 2011 riots. It’s looks pretty much the same as it did then. West Ealing has a three indian supermarkets, 4 or 5 charity shops (including a furniture shop, a pawnbrokers, an Iceland, a Wilkinsons, a Lidl, a Greggs and a Brighthouse. There’s a betting shop, a ‘Cashino’ which is one of those shops just filled with fruit machines and a Cash converters. It also has two banks, a Boots, a Costa, a BHS, a fishmongers, a Sainsburys and behind the main drag a massive Waitrose. Two types of shops, the ones you walk to and the ones that you drive to. Want to take a guess at which ones serve the well off? Pound shops haven’t really improved West Ealing and given that they pay minimum wage on zero hours contracts, they aren’t really helping with getting people out of poverty.

6) Patrick Steward is being awesome again!

7) Ma sent this to me last night. Immigration and London. I find Frank Field difficult, I accept that his heart is in the right place but that his attitudes are about 40 years out. The working class has changed and honestly the idea of young working class people being able to live at home and work their way up as I’m sure used to happen isn’t actually all that possible in the days of bedroom tax and student loans and zero hours contracts. I used to have this argument at the job centre, even if I could get a job earning £20k a year, my rent is £16k and I don’t qualify for council housing or any other form of state assistance so it doesn’t make economic sense to take a job on that salary. Sometimes the problem is lack of jobs, sometimes wages and cost of living. He’s right about one thing though, immigration always hits the working class negatively because it puts pressure on the services they need to get by. I know that’s not PC but we do need to start having a conversation about it.
