What happened last week

I spent most of last week, worrying about the mysterious rash and feeling quite tired. I do get brownie points for not taking any time off sick, I really wasn’t that sick I was just really tired, when I’m sick even the tinest bit my body reacts by making me sleepy. Given that generally I haven’t slept for more than 5 hours in a row for the last 9 years, this means I come home from work, have a nap for about an hour and then get up and sort myself out for the next morning, then go back to bed about 9.30pm and sleep until about 2am, spend 2 hours not sleeping and sleep until 5.30 ish. It makes me significantly not fun to be around and I spent most of the week, in bed or at work…

On Friday night, I met Christelle for drinks and took no photos, it’s been ages since we’ve seen each other and we were far to busy talking…

On Saturday morning, Max and I finally met for coffee and Murphy came too. We went to W7 in Hanwell, which is lovely and has good cake!

20140412-190141.jpg

Lovely to catch up with Max, Murphy is going through the nearly 3 year old phase of needing mummy’s attention all the time (I remember it well with Oli) but she was pretty good and when we walked home, fell fast asleep!

I also made a birthday cake for Adam…

20140413-070247.jpg

Which Kathy tells me was a hit! It’s always nice to know.

I did some housework but was so tired by about 7pm, I decided not to go to Grace, it starts at 8pm and by the time we’ve finished up, I’m not home until gone 11pm and I was just to tired for conversation.

On Sunday, I wanted to finish any tidying in the house and prep for next week. I’m going to the theatre on Monday night and it’s Easter next week so we have Friday and the following Monday off! Man, I love bank holidays, but because I have to fit five days work into four it’s makes for a busy week! Other than that, inspired by the weather, I went for a run, this has taught me some important things, 1) I’m out of shape, 2) I need to get another inhaler and 3) I need to run more often…

How was your week? What are your plans for this one?

Friday Night Cocktail Revisited

I haven’t been drinking cocktails much recently, last Friday I drank a G&T (the gin was Martin Millers) and a whisky and then I went to bed. Tonight, I’m meeting Christelle for a catch up and not drinking cocktails.

There are now loads of drinks on this blog and I’m rubbish at organising, so it’s entirely possible you all missed them.

So this time last year, I was drinking a variation on a White Lady, gin, lemon juice and Kamm and Sons.

Two years ago, I was adapting someone else’s recipe for a Green-ish Deacon

Friday Links

Happy Friday!  This week will go down as the week I completely failed at Friday Links, due to a combination of being really tired and really fed up with the news.

This doesn’t mean that there wasn’t any news just that I couldn’t read anything without being really cross especially where Maria Miller was concerned, just for the record, she resigned as a minister, she’s still an MP, she gets a tax free payment of £17,000 and only has to repay £4,000 ish of the £44,000 she fraudently claimed through expenses, she also gets to keep the £1.2 million she made from flipping her address and selling the house she claimed expenses on. That is not punishment. If I’d done that I’d have been sacked for gross misconduct and taken to court.

So this week’s links are short and sweet.

1) All book reviews should be like this! From Smart Bitches, Trashy Books but don’t read this if you’re easily shocked!

2) Following on from Dirtbag Anne of Green Gables, we have Dirtbag Little Women.

3) Sue Townsend died. If you grew up in the ’80’s in England you knew about Adrian Mole, I haven’t read all 7 of them, but I know I owned the first two.

A little bit ill..

On Tuesday, I was migraine-y, this is my word for when I don’t actually have a migraine but could if I’m not careful.  Careful in this context means painkillers, lots of water and going home for a nap as soon as I finish work.

So I went home and had a sleep. About 8pm, I woke up and got myself ready for the next morning and had a shower. Where I noted my chest was covered with a rash. This was not lovely.

I’m still covered in that rash, I have a sore throat and I’m losing my voice, much to the delight of my colleagues (if they think I can’t find silent ways of making them do what I need them to do, they don’t know me as well as they think!).

General consensus (nurse on the phone, google) is that I have a mild virus, I’m sick enough to feel rubbish but not actually sick enough that I can’t function.  On the plus side although I feel scuzzy, the rash isn’t anywhere that shows when I’m dressed. My life is a series of being grateful for mercies small and big.

Ma says my body’s reaction to being colds and flu is abnormal, I say I’m sensitive.

Face

I love skincare. If you hadn’t already worked it out, I’m mad keen on beauty products. I think I might love the faff of it, all those creams and lotions and serums that promise to give you perfect skin.

Apart from the odd hormonal spot and the equally hormonal patch of acne on my chin which comes and goes and I seem finally to have sorted, my skin is pretty good (even if I do say so myself!) so I thought it would be interesting to show you what I put on my face before I put my makeup on. It’s been educational for me to sit down and list everything that I use just to look after my face.

First things first, I’m blessed with my mother’s skin, ok not her actual skin, but her skin type, which is pale, dry to combination and slightly sensitive. I also come from pale people, Ma is fair skinned and Dad was a bit ginger. I have the worst of both worlds, I burn really easily and never tan. One day all my freckles will join up and I’ll have ginger skin, in the meantime, I use SPF.

photo

The first rule of good skin is that all the product in the world won’t do anything for you if you don’t have the basics in place. For me the basics are not smoking, drinking lots of water, using SPF and not going to bed with a dirty face covered in make up. Also wash your make up brushes regularly.

Morning.

20140409-091505.jpg

I wash my face with a gel wash. At the moment it’s Philosophy’s Purity Made Simple Foaming Cleanser. It wasn’t cheap but I’ve had the same tube since September and it makes my skin feel clean but not tight.

I follow this with Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant. I have probably babbled on about how much I love this stuff before because I love it so much. It’s my desert island skincare product. It’s gentle so my skin never feels scrubbed but it does feel clean and smooth. Again it’s not cheap but you don’t need much, I use about one bottle every nine months so it lasts a long time.

My moisturiser during the cold months is Revitalift Daily Moisturiser SPF 30, not greasy but properly moisturising and in the summer I swap to something lighter because I’m adding an extra layer of sunblock. Last year I used Avène Hydrance Optimale UV Light and Piz Buin In Sun Radiant Face Cream in SPF 30 but they seem only to be making it in SPF15 now. Which is a pain.

Night

20140409-091514.jpg

I take my make up off with a hot flannel and Waitrose Baby Bottom Butter, I’ve already written a post on how much I love this stuff and my opinion hasn’t changed, it removes all my make up and leaves my skin feeling good.

That’s followed up with Clarins Lotus Oli, I blame my mother for this, she was given a Clarins facial for Christmas and came back with this. I tried it a couple of times and bought some in Duty Free. I’m hooked, it makes my skin feel fantastic and I use less night cream as a result. My night cream is the Revitalift Classic Night Cream.

For the odd spot I do get, I use Freederm Gel.

20140409-091521.jpg

So tell me, what do you use on your face?

On the menu

This week I’m making an effort to use up what’s in the freezer. Actually, that’s my plan for this month. The freezer is about ready to be defrosted again and it makes sense to use up what’s in it and then defrost it!

Breakfast

Monday to Thursday will be toast, smoked salmon and veg. The bread is homemade sourdough, both it and salmon are from the freezer.

20140407-100600.jpg

Friday is pain au raisin day

20140324-094017.jpg

Weekend breakfasts are less planned but probably waffles or pancakes or eggs on toast or sausage, egg, black pudding and bacon.

20140317-065807.jpg20131028-065117.jpgDSCF0702photo

Lunches will be freezer soup or sprouted lentil salads

Dinners will be:

The chickpea, spinach and egg thing

DSCF3033

Vegan Beer Chilli, although it’s not vegan by the time I’ve dumped all the cheese on it!

DSCF3193

Chicken Enchilada Soup

DSCF4403

I only plan three meals and Friday Pizza, I like to leave one day a week free for using up leftovers etc and I’m out on Friday so that’s as far as I’ve got.

There’s yogurt and eggs and other vegetables for snacks and that’s it.

What are you eating this week?

Last week’s highlights included:

Work, quite a bit of work…

20140404-212138.jpg

Movies and Ice Cream. The film was Captain America, the ice cream Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey and Cherry Garcia..

20140407-094416.jpg

Things that happened but were not photographed:

DIY – replacing the toilet seat…again

Flip flops – it was warm enough and not wet for a couple of days so my feet were happy until Sunday when the rain returned

Wine and good friends – over to Kathy’s to talk children (her’s), careers (both) and other stuff. I’m capable of staying shut away with myself and my books and just when I’m at that point, my friends come and rescue me!

Boat Race – Oxford won! By 11 lengths…

Peppermint tea – I’ve started to replace tea for coffee Monday to Thursday. I still love coffee but I had the feeling that it didn’t love me. Fridays are coffee and pain au raisin days and at the weekend it just depends on what I’m doing. I’ve also gone back to limiting my booze intake. I wasn’t doing more than one G&T a day but I’m back to trying not to drink on schoolnights because overall I sleep better when I don’t have that G&T.

What happened in your part of the world last week?

Weekend Tasklist

It’s Saturday morning, which means that’s it’s time to talk housework! I had a conversation   this week about my lazy tendencies. I am actually half sloth and no-one believes me! I hate all forms of exercise and work generally. That I go to work, tidy the house and do stuff is entirely down to having to and this weekly list more or less keeps me on the straight and narrow but don’t for a second believe I do this because I want to, I do this because no-one else will do it but I’d much rather lie in bed or on the sofa reading!

Friday Links

Happy Friday. I don’t know about you but this week for me has been a bit odd.  Mostly, I’ve just been busy and tired, there was a conversation in the office this week about how 4 day weeks are strange because you spend the rest of the week playing catch up with yourself and I have felt some of that, which is why I didn’t post for some of this week. However, Friday is here and I’ve got through most of the office chores I needed to do and the weekend and a lie in tomorrow beckons.

This weeks links..

1) Tuesday was April Fools Day – this from CERN made me laugh

2) Not sure that this is fair but I’m not keen on council tax being properly linked to the value of the property I live in. The flat I live in could be conservatively valued at around £250,000, which I couldn’t afford. I’m happy to pay some tax but you’d have to have some kind of opt out for renters.

3) Dirtbag Anne of Green Gables.

4) Why China doesn’t have famines any more or why a mixed economy makes things better.

5) It’s been 20 years since the Rwandan Genocide, I heard this story about Capt Mbaye Diagne on Thursday morning on the radio.

6) Suzanne Moore on the housing crisis in London. Yes, I know that London gets subsidy and I think that the govt ignores the rest of the country at it’s peril but housing in London is ridiculous for the people that live here and aren’t super rich. And don’t tell me to move somewhere cheaper, this is where all my family and friends are.

7) There’s a whole show devoted to stationery. Where do I sign up?
