August Recap/September Goals

I really enjoyed August, it was a proper holiday month. There was my birthday and Ryan’s wedding and 7 days off work. It was lovely.

  • I had 1 migraine this month, on a day off no less, but I can lay the blame on that firmly on having too much fun, booze and late nights on my week off at the end of the month.
  • It was an ok month for exercise. I haven’t been regular with the body balance classes but I have taken up a 30-ish minute walk as part of my journey to and from work. It’s a really good way for me to mark the change between work and home. Over August, I’ve taken nearly 300,000 steps, which given that I didn’t wear the fitbit for quite a lot of the last week in August is pretty good.
  • My eating has been much the same, my sleep has been much the same, I’m still 4 to 5 hours a night, not great but not too bad for me.
  • I bought 4 books last month which means I can only buy 5 this year but I’m on the home straight with only 4 months of the year left and no trip to Barter Books in October.
  • The house is tidy and clean but that’s about it. I need to clean the oven again!
  • I barely stuck to the budget this month there was too much fun happening in August!

September Plans and Goals

September is not a very busy month. I have an allotment volunteer day, 2 birthday parties, for a 43 and a 4 year old. Waiting for the new niece or nephew, due any day now! Mostly though September is a month for getting back on track. It’s been more than 20 years since I was tied to the school/uni calendar but September is the time to clean up my act and get back into a routine. Also, although the clocks don’t go back until the end of October, it’s darker in the morning and evenings and that makes mornings harder to deal with, so this month has to be about forming the habits that will (hopefully) ensure that I’m not a wibbering heap of SAD when the lack of sun really kicks in on the lead up to Christmas!

BODY & MIND

I know that exercise is good for mild depression (which is essentially what SAD is for me) so I need to exercise a bit, I’m starting (actually started) doing 20 squats, 10 sit-ups, 10 press-ups: and a 10 sec plank every day. It isn’t much at all but I’m increasing the first three by one and the plank by 2 sec each morning. By the end of the month I’ll be doing 49/39 and a plank for over a minute. Which gives me a good base for October.

2 body balance classes a week. It is the bare minimum, I actually hope to do 3-4 a week but work is nuts in the first 2 weeks of the month with meetings that run on and on, unfortunately, leaving because you have a class is frowned upon!

2 x 30 minute walks Monday to Friday. I’ve been doing this more or less since the tube strikes and walking is good for you…

Yoga before bed every day. As part of having a proper bedtime routine and wind down before lights out, which is 10pm Sunday to Thursday.

With the exception of Kathy’s birthday and maybe champagne when the newest member of the family arrives, September is a no alcohol month. I don’t view my drinking as excessive but with birthdays, holidays, a night at Christelle and Mike’s and a wedding, my consumption was higher than usual in August and I’m feeling a bit jaded, so a small period of abstinence is probably no bad thing!IMG_2825

HOME (BOOKS)

This is another more of the same goal, don’t buy any books…photo

HOME GENERAL

It’s pretty tidy at the moment but there are a couple of things that I need to attend to.

  • Clean the oven (again!)
  • Clean the living room windows, these windows have been open most of the summer and the surrounds of them are filthy and need a good scrub
  • I need another bedroom clear out, I still have too much stuff!

MONEY

This is more of the same, stick to the budget. You know actually stick to it rather than just barely avoiding disaster every month…

What I’ve Read – August 2015

August has been a month of easy reading, I had access to a friend’s ebooks this month so there was so much new stuff to read and didn’t read anything too taxing, there was a lot of romance. It was also the month of a lot of reading, I was a reading machine..

Blood of Tyrants – Naomi Novik (library e-book)

This is my last Temeraire novel until the last one comes out next year and it was all the things I like about the series but I’m really tired of the villains of the piece being the Admiralty and co, when they are fighting Napoleon. I know that most of the world views Napoleon as a genius and this is alternate history but the Russian campaign was the beginning of the end for Napoleon, it was the point at which his arrogance outran his supposed genius and the book finishes with him turning around his loss and seemingly about to take Russia, I don’t like him to win, even in fiction. If the next book is last one, he better end up defeated!

The Royal We – Jessica Morgan and Heather Cocks  (borrowed)

This is clearly based on Prince William and Kate Middleton. Changing some key stuff and giving us a different Royal Family. It needed a British editor, posh girls from Yorkshire (the sort that are on first name terms with Royals) do not speak with Yorkshire accents, they speak in RP or for that matter know Cockney Rhyming Slang (which I am thankful they didn’t try to write, just referenced), port is just called port here not port wine and the last and most egregious thing for me was describing Shepherds Bush as arty. Shepherds Bush is halfway between where I grew up and where I live now. My dad grew up there, my mum used to work there and while I accept that it’s up and coming with a Westfield there nowadays, I can’t swallow it being described as arty! All of that makes it seem like I didn’t enjoy it, but I really did..

The Understatement of the Year – Sarina Bowen (Kindle TBR List)

This is the third book in the Ivy League series and it’s as readable and sweet as the others, what makes it stand out is that the couple are gay, both hockey players. One out and coping with all the nonsense that entails in a macho sport and one very firmly in the closet. It doesn’t brush over the difficulties of that situation but it also doesn’t make it all about that. I’m so glad that Bowen tackled it and if I could pick a grandma, I want the one in this book!

The Shameless Hour – Sarina Bowen (borrowed)

I’m not sure how I feel about ‘the incident’ but I liked that it dealt with it but I think this is an upbringing and generational thing for me because I couldn’t relate to what happened to Bella. The being in control of your sexuality thing and not being ashamed I understand but it seemed to me that Bella was ashamed and her sleeping around was 50% ’cause she wanted to and 50% acting out at what happened with her family. What happened was horrible but the way she internalised it, it seems to me that she was ashamed. The other part of it that I don’t get is being around people who would sleep with her and act like she should be ashamed or dirty. I guess that this is generational because I think that for all society is supposed to be more open and liberated, in terms of sex and enjoyment of sex, attitudes to sex are much more Victorian than they’ve been for a while. Now the argument may be that it was ever thus but my experience is that if men/boys have that attitude and membership of a fraternity that has a ‘slut of the week’ contest may be a clue, you don’t bloody sleep with them or hang out there by yourself and this is not about putting the blame for sexual assault on women, it’s about being realistic AND valuing yourself. I wouldn’t be friends with someone who didn’t value my, why would I sleep with them?

Beautiful Secret – Christina Lauren (borrowed)

I’ve just realised how many books I’ve read this month have characters who’ve been sexually assaulted in them. In this instance, it felt unnecessary, like it was a way of giving Ruby some depth. It didn’t really gel for me, I was more interested in why one of the friends (clearly from an earlier book) referred to the wife of a mate as ‘the Dark One’.

Helen of Sparta – Amalia Carosella (Kindle TBR List)

Well in this instance the rape of Helen is the least of the horrible stuff. It ends with Helen going back to Sparta to be married to Melanaus (and we know what happens then) and Thesus trapped in the underworld. It made for good but uncomfortable reading, with questions about fate and agency and control.

The Deal – Elle Kennedy (borrowed)

The Mistake – Elle Kennedy (borrowed)

The Duality Principle – Rebecca Grace Allan (borrowed)

The Hierarchy of Needs – Rebecca Grace Allan (borrowed)

The Hurricane – R.J Prescott (borrowed)

Getting to Her – Erin Nichols (borrowed)

Firelight – Kristen Callihan (borrowed)

Bittersweet – Noelle Adams (borrowed)

Getting to Her – Erin Nichols (borrowed)

Three Weeks with Lady X – Eloisa James (Kindle TBR)

This was so funny, I need to check out more of James’ books..

Welcome to the Shadowhunter Academy – Cassandra Clare & Sarah Rees Brennan (library e-book)

The Lost Herondale – Cassandra Clare & Robin Wasserman (library e-book)

The Marriage Contract – Katee Robert (borrowed)

First Time in Forever – Sarah Morgan (borrowed)

Nothing But Shawdows -Cassandra Clare & Sarah Rees Brennan (library e-book)

The Whitechapel Fiend – Cassandra Clare and Maureen Johnson (library e-book)

The Evil We Love – Cassandra Clare & Robin Wasserman (library e-book)

Getting Over It – Erin Nichols (bought)

Heat Exchange – Shannon Stacey (bought)

The Queen of the Tearling – Erika Johansen (bought)

I loved this, I’ve got the next one on order from the library…

Fangirl – Rainbow Rowell (re-read)

My Life Next Door – Huntley Fitzpatrick (re-read)

Life Happened – Holiday

I took a holiday. It was lovely, I really needed the time away from work! I had the week off to go to Ryan and Claire’s wedding.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIn my head, Ryan is still the cute five year old I used to read stories to and chase around the park. In fact, he is a grown man who despite being a total drama queen, is responsible (as much as any of us are!), kind, occasionally wise and now married!

It was a pretty good wedding and it was lovely to catch up with everyone.  I read something the other day and this really stayed with me

family, as a concept, isn’t fixed to marriage. It is a fluid relationship of intimacies between communities that aren’t always confined to blood.

I really love the irony of feeling that at a wedding, Tom, who is one of Sarah’s best friends said that he felt that Sarah’s friends were part of his extended community too. It’s one of Sarah’s gifts, she collects us and makes us family and it’s a gift Ryan inherited.

Friday Links

Happy Friday! Today is the last day in August that I have to be in the office and despite already having had 2 days of this month, I cannot wait!  Here are this week’s links

Lovin’ their elevator: why Germans are loopy about their revolving lifts. Are we sure that they aren’t called paternosters because that’s the prayer you utter when in one? I bet David Cameron has never been compared to a lift…

Strohschneider believes the reason why many paternosters still exist in Germany, relative to elsewhere in Europe, is because they suit the “German penchant for reliability, efficiency and resistance to change. They are like Angela Merkel. They’ve been around a long time, they work well and because of that they give us a sense of security.”

When keeping a child from their mother is in their best interests I was shouting at the radio last week when the Latvian guy was defending the ‘maternal feelings’ of the mother.

In March 2010, when CB was aged 22 months, she was found alone at home after the landlord had called the police. The little girl was wet and shivering. She had not been changed or cleaned all day. There were dried faeces on her body and her skin was soaked in urine that had leaked from her nappy and gone through her clothes, causing dermatitis.

If she could leave her child in that state, I question those maternal feelings. Look I understand that parents mess up and need help to change behaviour. I also know that the kind of help required take time and money and should not be at the expense of a child’s right to be safe and feel love. I’m a bit biased about this especially at the moment, I’ve seen what happens when children who’ve been neglected are placed in a family, they blossom but what happened to them leaves scars. So I have very little for the birth mother and huge amounts of sympathy for that little girl and her adoptive parents who have given her what she needs and been her parents and have been waiting for that to be legal.

ISIS Enshrines a Theology of Rape This is just..I don’t have words for this. I know that Islamic concept of God is different from the Christian concept and that Christians have (and still do) use the Bible to justify slavery. It confirms my belief that all fundamentalist religion has very little to do with God but is about control and justification of whatever the hell you want, which is the opposite of faith.

“I said to him, ‘She’s just a little girl,’ ” the older woman recalled. “And he answered: ‘No. She’s not a little girl. She’s a slave. And she knows exactly how to have sex.’ ’’

“And having sex with her pleases God,” he said.

Increase in applications for dual nationality before the vote on staying in the EU. We’ve been talking about this and I’m still considering applying for an Irish passport if vote goes for exit. I’m not sure what happens to Christelle and my other friends from EU countries who lived here for ages…

We must resist the allotment land grab. I don’t have a garden or windowsills or a balcony, I can’t really grow anything useful at the moment and the waiting list is 4 plus years. My local allotments already only give half plots anything smaller is probably a bit useless if you don’t have a car or a garden.

Supermarket gins win a taste test. I want a list of all the gins they tasted because it seems to me that this is about basic gins such as Gordons, as opposed to say the glory that is Plymouth or Sipsmith.

Stuff it in a pepper and call it done

Every week I make a shopping list and every week the first item is peppers. I love peppers, I eat them raw, I roast them, I stir fry them, peppers are basically my favourite, except for the green ones which are foul!

My mother is never knowingly without broccoli, for me it’s peppers (and carrots)..OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAPeppers are one of the ways that I prevent food waste because most leftovers are amazing if you stuff them in a pepper and bake them. I’ve stuffed peppers with cous cous salad and eaten them cold, with lentils and beans and rice and whatever has been in the fridge.IMG_3301 These ones were stuffed with leftover dahl.

On the weekend, before I shop, I assess the state of the leftovers in the fridge and if there’s something to stuff a pepper with, then that’s one meal I don’t have to plan, I usually eat them with green beans. It’s such an easy way of sorting out dinner, I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before…

Stuff Happens

Timehop is an interesting thing, just giving you a recap of this date in the life of your social media for every year you’ve been on it. On this day six years ago, the tweet just said ‘Unemployment’. Which is pretty much all that needed to be said. Because around about 6 years ago, I lost my job. I found out the company had gone into administration the day after my birthday and today marks the day I got a end date, 28 August.

It marked the beginning of nine months of some serious uncertainty in my life and even when I finally got a job, it was to cover maternity leave for a year, followed by another seven or so months of temp work and unemployment before I got my current job.  It took a little over two years for me to get full time permanent work again. It took another 2 years before I stopped being worried that I’d lose it again.

Six years later, I can see some good things that came out of that time. I learnt about openess and trust, I learnt that I have really good friends, I didn’t need to learn that Ma was a star but she was. It was also a grim and frightening time. Being unemployed is horrible (worse than having to work!), having no money is hard, relying on benefit is scary and insecure. I wrote about it here, and here, and here, and here.

I’m thankful, so thankful that I’m not in that place now, despite how crazy work makes me but it had an impact on me and while some of it was good for me, I would rather that it never happened again. So today I’m going to be grateful for my life now and try not to be too cross about everything I need to do before I can go home and read…

And that folks is my pollyanna moment for day.

Life Happened – A tiny bit broken

After the birthday week of loveliness, it was back to earth with a bump for a full week of work and my busiest work week of the month.

What saved me this week was my decision to walk a bit more. I’ve changed my journey into work and go into Paddington Station, from there I walk to the office. It takes roughly half an hour and doing that walk twice a day, has had a huge impact on my mood. It really helps me draw a line between work and home and improved my step count on the Fitbit and this week I logged over 100,000 steps!

Work may not be good but good things are happening everywhere else, on Friday night I had dinner with Kathy and Adam with fizz to celebrate the adoption order being granted. As Kathy says, nothing has changed but everything has, I’m so pleased for them! Their eldest made me something to pin on my fridge, I’m taking it as a good thing because normally I’m not allowed to take the artwork home!IMG_3290On Saturday, the allotments had an open day, they are looking great. I also got lots of free cooking applesIMG_3295The waiting list as at April 2015 is 67 people and the 9 people at the top of the list joined in 2012. I joined in October 2014 so with any luck I’ll have an allotment by the time I’m 45!IMG_3296IMG_3297I spent Saturday night at Mike and Christelle’s, it was fun

As a result, I didn’t do much on Sunday!
