Friday Links

Happy Friday! Today is the last day in August that I have to be in the office and despite already having had 2 days of this month, I cannot wait!  Here are this week’s links

Lovin’ their elevator: why Germans are loopy about their revolving lifts. Are we sure that they aren’t called paternosters because that’s the prayer you utter when in one? I bet David Cameron has never been compared to a lift…

Strohschneider believes the reason why many paternosters still exist in Germany, relative to elsewhere in Europe, is because they suit the “German penchant for reliability, efficiency and resistance to change. They are like Angela Merkel. They’ve been around a long time, they work well and because of that they give us a sense of security.”

When keeping a child from their mother is in their best interests I was shouting at the radio last week when the Latvian guy was defending the ‘maternal feelings’ of the mother.

In March 2010, when CB was aged 22 months, she was found alone at home after the landlord had called the police. The little girl was wet and shivering. She had not been changed or cleaned all day. There were dried faeces on her body and her skin was soaked in urine that had leaked from her nappy and gone through her clothes, causing dermatitis.

If she could leave her child in that state, I question those maternal feelings. Look I understand that parents mess up and need help to change behaviour. I also know that the kind of help required take time and money and should not be at the expense of a child’s right to be safe and feel love. I’m a bit biased about this especially at the moment, I’ve seen what happens when children who’ve been neglected are placed in a family, they blossom but what happened to them leaves scars. So I have very little for the birth mother and huge amounts of sympathy for that little girl and her adoptive parents who have given her what she needs and been her parents and have been waiting for that to be legal.

ISIS Enshrines a Theology of Rape This is just..I don’t have words for this. I know that Islamic concept of God is different from the Christian concept and that Christians have (and still do) use the Bible to justify slavery. It confirms my belief that all fundamentalist religion has very little to do with God but is about control and justification of whatever the hell you want, which is the opposite of faith.

“I said to him, ‘She’s just a little girl,’ ” the older woman recalled. “And he answered: ‘No. She’s not a little girl. She’s a slave. And she knows exactly how to have sex.’ ’’

“And having sex with her pleases God,” he said.

Increase in applications for dual nationality before the vote on staying in the EU. We’ve been talking about this and I’m still considering applying for an Irish passport if vote goes for exit. I’m not sure what happens to Christelle and my other friends from EU countries who lived here for ages…

We must resist the allotment land grab. I don’t have a garden or windowsills or a balcony, I can’t really grow anything useful at the moment and the waiting list is 4 plus years. My local allotments already only give half plots anything smaller is probably a bit useless if you don’t have a car or a garden.

Supermarket gins win a taste test. I want a list of all the gins they tasted because it seems to me that this is about basic gins such as Gordons, as opposed to say the glory that is Plymouth or Sipsmith.
