The last few days

A couple of weeks ago, I ran out of CQ10 and because being unemployed goes hand in hand with having no money, I didn’t get any more. This turned out to be a mistake because I spent Tuesday with a migraine. Now when I say migraine I don’t mean a bad headache. A bad headache is manageable with painkillers, a migraine is lots of pain, occasional vomiting and a need to be in the dark. You don’t actually die but wish you had because then your head wouldn’t hurt.

Yesterday, I felt concussed and had red marks all over my face when I woke up, no I really don’t know how either, but it looked liked I had spent the night pressing my fingers onto my face. Who knows maybe I have…

So Tuesday was a complete waste of a day, yesterday was like wading through treacle, very, very slow.  I did do some things though. I sewed, I spoke to godson no 1, who is coming to London next week. Which his mother and I have been asking him to do for months. (Something I have never understood, is why we always make out that small children are hard work and it gets easier as they get older. Physically, that’s true, with toddlers you don’t get lie in’s but loving adult children is harder, yes you get more sleep and if you are really lucky they view you as friends but you can’t make everything better for them and they will insist on doing what they want to do rather than what you think is best. I’m pretty sure that Ben and I have caused Ma to worry more as adult than we ever did as children!), I’ve arranged to meet Max and Murphy next week, I’ve organised a trip to the cinema (Ides of March) and made more lentil soup.

However, dynamic is not a word you can assign to the last few days.  Today, the weather is miserable and Giles Fraser resigned from St Paul’s. Whatever you think of the Occupy London Stock Exchange protests (I would like them to have a mission statement other than bankers are bad ie support for the Tobin Tax, a halt to bonuses of over a £1000 if you work for a bank that is still being bailed out are two that spring to mind) they have a right to protest, they do seem to be working hard to re-arrange the camp to meet St Paul’s concerns and St Paul’s don’t seem to be aiding that. It seems to me that you would find Jesus in the protest not with the bankers, what with throwing the moneylenders out of the Temple and the ‘ it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of the needle than a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven’ speech, it would be nice if the Church could remember that…

Christelle Getting Married

In August 2012, Christelle is marrying Mike. About time too..they’ve been disgustingly in love for over 8 years…

Christelle is one of my dead prostitute friends. That doesn’t mean that she is a dead prostitute, it means that if I woke up in a hotel room that contained me and a dead prostitute, she’s one of the people that I would call to help dispose of said dead prostitute…and vice versa.

In fact so strong is my affection, I would if she required it, even get dressed up in a fluffy bridesmaid’s dress for her wedding. However, Christelle is a true friend and content in the knowledge that I would if asked, hasn’t asked me to. Also she’s French and bridesmaids aren’t a French tradition. I am going to be her witness, calmer of nerves, holder of bag full of stuff she might need on the day and organiser of hen night/weekend.  I have also been to the wedding dress shops with her.

It needs to be noted that I’m not really a real girl in that I’ve never really wanted a big white wedding* basically because I’m too bloody lazy and, as I am learning via Christelle, there are so many things to do and think about. However, Christelle is not me and as I have discovered looks really good in a wedding dress!

We’ve been to 3 shops and Christelle has tried on about 15 dresses. On Saturday, she found ‘the dress’, it was perfect. Looked amazing, fitted beautifully and was on sale. It really felt like it was meant to be and so she bought it. So we have added another thing to my list of ‘not quite a bridesmaid’ duties, keeper of the dress (I think that I need to up my contents insurance!)

So I have landed on planet ‘not quite a bridesmaid’, I’m quite surprised to be here. I’m also really surprised at how strange and exciting it is for Christelle to have the dress, we really didn’t think that she’d have it until sometimes next year.

Wonder what else I’ll learn before August.

*I feel I should also point out that I’m totally aware that it’s not likely to happen, I’m getting too long in the tooth to do the blushing bride thing anyway and I am totally not skinny enough to be comfortable in white..

Little shafts of Light that spill from Heaven

It’s been a bad day. France lost the rugby world cup final and in football news, Chelsea lost the West London derby to QPR, my brother is cockahoop and I am desolate.

This cheered me up no end. From Letters of Note.

Sipsmith Cocktail Masterclass

Last week, Ma and I went to Sipsmith to the Cocktail Masterclass they were holding for London Cocktail Week.

I visited Sipsmith earlier in the year with the London Cocktail Society and was impressed by their passion for making gin and enthusiasm for sharing what they know. I’ve been telling anyone who’ll listen that they should go to one of their tours. So when I saw that they were doing events all through the week, I knew that I was going to one of them and I knew I was taking Ma.

So off we went to Hammersmith. At this point I feel I should apologise for the photos. It was dark and I was drinking…

When we got there the ice hadn’t arrived so we were given sloe gin instead of G&T’s and basically stood around talking to Jared Brown, a drinks historian and font of so much cocktail knowledge. We talked about sloe whiskey (which I have to try making), where to get sloe berries if you live in London and don’t know where to pick them (ebay) and all sorts of other things.

Set up

When the ice arrived and G&T’s dished out, we started.  James gave a condensed history of Sipsmith, Prudence the still (I won a coffee mug!) and how they made the gin and the vodka and of course we tasted both.

Then Jared started us on the 1st cocktail, the martini. Made half gin, half red vermouth, this is apparently as it was originally made.  (Top tip, once opened keep vermouth in the fridge, use it up within a month. So treat it like sherry!)

Martini (the original way)

I liked it and for people who need convincing about martinis and gin, this would be a good place to start. Jared also said that it matters not whether you shake or stir a martini, you can’t bruise it and shaking will give you a cold martini but leave you with tiny bits of ice in your drink which will dilute it. I stand corrected but will still be stirring mine!

Then Jared got us to try his wormwood gin. Yep, wormwood. The stuff originally put in absinthe, can cause hallucinations. Fortunately for us, it had only been in the gin an hour and resulted in a creamy flavour. I thought that it was ok and could see how you could use it with other flavours. Ma was not convinced!

Onto the next cocktail, the Cornwall Collins. Sloe gin, lemon juice, soda water. Lovely and refreshing. I would have preferred to use tonic, but then I’ve been drinking sloe gin and tonic for years!

Cornwall Collins

Time for more tasting, smoked vodka. This was interesting, I thought that it tasted like smoked salmon. Jared had smoked it over applewood, which might account for the smoked salmon taste!

Finally onto the last cocktail. The Lady Grey martini, gin infused with Earl Grey tea, lemon juice, simply syrup and an egg white. Shaken hard. It was ok, but I really couldn’t have drunk more than one and Ma couldn’t finish hers at all.

Very out of focus

Finally, we tried the sloe gin and damson vodka, both of which I already like. Both would be great in a hip flask, they are a winter kind of drink, in fact, I took the damson vodka with me to Greenbelt so can testify to how good it is in cold weather!

Then it was time to go. As we left, we were given a half bottle of the gin and the vodka, or 2 half bottles of the gin (Ma!) and got to take the equipment we used on night with us.

Really great evening, I learned loads and had fun.

Feeling a litte bit rant-y

Liam Fox

I accept that Adam Werrity is a close friend of his and I really don’t care for all the ‘is he gay’ stuff doing the rounds. However, ask yourself this question, does anyone take their close friends to business meetings?, if your close friend knocked up a business card with the logo for the company you worked for and hawked themselves out to your clients as your advisor, would you be ok with that? Because regardless of all the detail, if you take Liam Fox at his word, he was completely ok with that.

Sorry Liam, that’s not a failure of judgement, that’s just bloody stupid. Really, if you couldn’t see how completely nuts that was then you don’t deserve to be in Parliament, let alone in the Cabinet and in charge Defence. Your behaviour comprised the security of this country. You let a man who you knew not to be working for the government attend high level meetings as if he did. You let him set up meetings he shouldn’t have been involved in, you let him pass himself as something he wasn’t to other governments. You attended meetings he arranged in hotels that weren’t security checked, with people that you weren’t supposed to meet. Frankly, it would be easier to comprehend if you were under some sexual spell, because who would think that was ok?

That you did, shows how completely out of touch with the real world you are.

Lentil Soup

I came late to lentil party. I don’t remember eating them when I was little and as a result never really used them in my cooking. Then in my late 20’s, I developed a taste for Tarka Dal but that has been as far my lentil eating went. More recently, I have started to eat a puy lentil salad and a yellow lentil soup. Both of these are adaptions of things I ate at Tina’s, so I should both blame and thank her! The soup has the advantage of being cheap, easy to make and really tasty, I am more than a little obsessed with it!!

The recipe below is more of a guide than anything else. It makes a really thick soup, but if you like soup thinner then use more stock, if you prefer soup chunky don’t blend it! The same applies to the spices and the lime, I like it this way but don’t be afraid of adding more or using less.  I think it’s best served with seeds (my preference is the three seed mix of pumpkin, sunflower and pinenuts that I use in bread, and a spoonful of linseeds) and a dollop of natural yogurt. Although, I reckon some bacon crumbled on top or some ham would also be good additions, if you have to have meat too.

What

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 teaspoons of cumin seeds

2 teaspoons easy ginger

2 large carrots, peeled and grated

1 large onion, diced

1.5 litres vegatable stock

150g yellow lentils

juice of 1 to 2 limes

How

1) In a medium sized pot, fry the cumin seeds and ginger in the olive oil until the seeds start to pop.

2) Add the carrots and onion and cook on a medium heat for a further 5 minutes or so

3) Add the lentils and stock and simmer for 30 to 45 minutes until the lentils are soft.

4) Blend the soup, adding the juice of the lime to taste.

5) Eat!
