Friday Links

Happy Friday! Today I am all about getting as much done as possible and then having an afternoon off to make a birthday cake, I maybe take being an aunt a little too seriously!

This week the early mornings have really cut into the time I’ve spend on the internet. Well not so much the early mornings but the early nights that are required to get up 6am every morning. I am completely unable to cope if I’m not in bed by 9.30pm, which makes the evenings a bit busy and there’s just no time to find good stuff to read!

1) Motherhood is not the most important job in the world.

2) Alex Andreou pointing out that people work for pay not necessarily the joy of it!

3) The Norwegian Army is introducing Meatless Monday.

4) Mince pie taste test. Which reminds me, I need to start making mine!

Oliver is Four

Oli will be 4 tomorrow.

I still can’t quite believe that the tiny baby is a walking, talking child that goes to school. The days go slowly but the years fly by!

Not as expected…a small rant

It’s a feature of me getting older but I’ve noticed a worrying trend towards things not being as advertised. Here are three that are troubling me this week.

Example One

A new bar called Steam and Rye, it’s a new venue from Nick House (guy behind Whisky Mist, Punch Bowl, Mahiki et al) and Kelly Brook. It’s themed as a tribute to 40’s Americana. So far so good, I looked at the website and the bar menu and it all looks great. However, unless I am going blind, you know what I can’t see on the menu? Rye whiskey.

Maybe it’s me but I would have expected a bar called Steam & Rye would have some cocktails on the menu using rye whiskey. Come on people, it’s in the name….

Example Two

The Guardian TV & Radio Blog. Because you know what it NEVER has? Any posts about radio programmes. The TV & Radio section has the odd review of a radio programme and there’s a monthly recap of The Archers by Nancy Banks-Smith but that’s pretty much all the radio it covers. Now I know that I am unusual in not having a TV and I enjoy reading  about TV programmes too it but it’s not a TV & Radio blog if it’s only about the TV. It’s a TV blog. I don’t mind if it is but don’t call it something it’s not. It can’t be about radio, if you never write anything about radio programmes.

Example Three

Good Service on the Piccadilly Line. Dear TfL, if I wait for a train and it arrives but I can’t get on it. That is not good service. If I manage to get on a train but have to travel with someone’s armpit rammed in my face because it’s so overcrowded that is not good service. It’s not a great customer experience to pay £1,424 for a years ticket to travel into work and have to stand for most of it, or to be late for work because of signal failure at Hammersmith three weeks in a row. That is no-one’s definition of good anything, let alone service. If what you actually mean is that the trains are running on schedule, say that before I lose my mind.

Breakfast Pots

I think that I’ve already mentioned that I’m having a busy week at work and one of the ways that I get ahead of myself is to get to work at 8am instead of 9am. This means that I need to be up and ready to leave the house at 7am and there’s not a lot of time to eat breakfast, I drink water and coffee in the morning while I’m getting ready but take my breakfast into work with me to eat when I get in.

I’ve done this before when work was a bit manic but what I eat has changed a bit. It used to be porridge or granola but I’m learning that they are not good options for me because by 10am, I’m hungry again and if I’m thinking about my stomach, I’m not concentrating on my work.

So protein is the answer and mostly that has taken the form of eggcups, but I’m getting a little burned out on eggcups, variety is the spice of life after all.  I came up with this after eating something similar from Pret.

When I know I’m going to have a busy week, I cook lentils and another grain (pearl barley or quinoa) and store in the fridge. Busy times are when the menu plan needs to be simple because otherwise I just won’t stick to them, so often the meal plan is stir fry with lentils or hash with pearl barley, it’s easy quick and tastes different every time!

These work the same way, I use a quarter cup of cooked quinoa and a quarter cup of cooked green lentils. Then I add whatever I fancy to it. So far this week it’s been salmon flakes and leftover corn and black bean taco filling (which I made with extra shredded red cabbage and carrot!). But raw vegetables, spinach, roasted tomatoes, chickpeas and sprouted lentils are on my list to try too! It’s endlessly adaptable.

I just put it together when I make my lunch in the evening and if it’s not really your ideal breakfast it would make a pretty great lunch too!

Weekend Tasks – What I Did

Kitchen

  • Clean the oven. Again.
  • General clean (sort out the recycling and rubbish, mopping the floor and general cleaning)

Cooking

  • Food prep for the week, breakfasts and lunches
  • Test cake for Oli’s birthday – I ran out of time, I’ll make the cake on Thursday and if it goes wrong I have Friday to sort it out!

Bathroom

  • General clean (mop floor, change towels, empty bin, clean bath, sink and toilet)
  • Sort out and clean bathroom cabinet

Bedroom

  • General clean (mop floor, change bed, dust, general tidy)
  • Sort out jewellery drawer

Living Room

  • General clean (sweep floor, dust, tidy sofa, put things away etc)

Hall

  • Hoover

General House things

  • Washing (clothes wash, white wash, towel wash), I’ll do the whites when everything else is dry – this is the downside to not putting your heating on!
  • Ironing
  • Wash make up brushes
  • Water plants
  • Shopping
  • Back up laptop
  • Charge kindle and camera batteries
  • Paint frames for the kitchen wall
  • Put pictures in frames and hang on wall
  • Send out Christmas CD’s (it’s not too late to shout if you want one, think of it as my gift to you for reading the blog!)

Some of the stuff I didn’t do are quick wins that I can do during the week without too much thought, but the kitchen pictures will have to wait a couple of weeks!

Monday Morning and a plan for the week.

Happy Monday people! This weekend was quiet and I didn’t take any photos, so the recap of the weekend can be summed up as sleep, cleaning, minor frustration, knitting, more sleep, made a new friend (hi Janice aka Fit Foot!).

20131018-092118.jpg

This week is going to be busy at work, I’m covering my work and Laura’s while she’s in Vegas. This is a good thing because it’s giving me some much needed November motivation. I also have to make Oli’s Spongebob cake (he was going for minions but changed his mind!). The goal this week is to get through to the end of it with as much grace and the least grumpiness I can manage!

Other than a cheerful attitude, I’m going need organisation and sleep. I have a menu plan (also a question- would any of you like to see the menu plans? I’ve posted about how I do them but I see lots of weekly posts of them on other blogs, so if it’s something you’re interesting in, let me know!) but I’ve also pre cooked some quinoa and lentils so the basis for a quick and healthy dinner is there if I go off plan! Coffee is an essential but I’m going to stick to a small pot at home in the morning and drink herbal tea during the day, I don’t want to end the week over-caffeinated!

20131007-073059.jpg

I will be trying to go to bed at 9.30pm this week, I know, it’s very early but I do better and have a better attitude if I get a lot of sleep and last week was a good example if why I need to make that happen more in winter, I was so tired it took all weekend to catch up!

So what about you? What’s happening for your this week? How are you going about it?

50 Days Update

This week has been a better week, I’ve been well and at work everyday. So how is it going?

Spirit

I’ve signed up to Thankful in November with Krissie.

Week One – The emails have been coming every day and I’ve spent 10 minutes or so thinking about them and so far it has been good for me and helped to get my head in the right place, in fact see the post this morning as an example.

Week Two – No real change here. I am  practising being thankful and I think it makes me a happier person. The 10 minutes or so that I spend thinking about all the good things in my life are great for grounding me, so that when stuff does go wrong (this week it was mostly public transport related!) I can put it in the place it belongs, rather than get all ‘this is the end of the world and my life is rubbish’.

Mind

8.30pm cut of for laptop/ipad/iphone usage on school nights.

Week One – I’ve been doing this with bells on. Last week, I knew I was proper ill because I didn’t want to be anywhere near a screen, so it was accidental rather than deliberate. Yesterday, I found the 8.30pm cut off really useful, it was good to put the laptop down and go and do something else, yesterday that was tidying the kitchen, making today’s lunch and taking my makeup off. I would normally do those things before bed but at 10pm, when I should be in bed!

Week Two – I’m finding it easier to get to sleep on the nights that I enforce the cut off, so that’s a good reminder of why I need to do it but on Thursday night I failed and was watching something while knitting!

Bed by 10pm on 30 of the 50 days.  Getting up by 6.30am on workdays and 8.30am on weekends.

Week One – So I did this Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and then pretty much didn’t get out of bed until Saturday. So being in bed by 10pm not a problem, I was lights out at about 8.30pm but getting up times, that just didn’t happen at all! Sunday night I started again so I can’t tell you anything about it based on 2 mornings this week. What I have noticed is that I have the to have the wake up light set for 6am and the radio alarm set for 5.45am, to make 6.30am out of bed work. That’s ok, I’m quite keen on Farming Today.

Week Two – Now than I’m not sick, I’m finding that imposing the bedtime is harder than the forcing myself to get out of bed in the morning. I knew that Wednesday would be a late night because I was out. On Thursday, I just lost track of time, I was knitting and watching something and before I knew it, it was 10:30pm and I hadn’t taken my make-up off! However, I got up earlier than 6:30am on Thursday and Friday! We’ll see if that carries on but I’m making no promises…

Body

Sit-ups/push-ups/squats 10 a day, adding one each day

Week One – Started fine, didn’t do anything Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun or Mon. Started again today with 19 of each. Not pleasant but done.

Week Two – I’ve swapped my time for doing this, at the weekend it happens in the morning, during the week in the evening. As it takes more time to do as I add to the total, I just don’t have time on weekday mornings. I don’t really feel any stronger for doing it but I’m hoping that it will form a good base to push off from after Christmas!

Stretches

Week One – Missed Wed, Thurs, Fri completely but started again on Sat, needed to as 3 days pretty much lying down, does nothing for your mobility!

Week Two – I get one set in everyday, before I go to bed, I really need to work on being consistent with the second set. Not sure how to make that happen right how, may it’s something I’ll start to do after I do the squats etc.

So there you have it. Not spectacular but not terrible either!
